Bill Campbell, a retiree from West Valley College, has come to San Jose City College in an effort to assist as the Interim Director of Athletics and Kinesiology, while administration searches for a permanent replacement.

Prior to Campbell filing the position, SJCC has not had a permanent person in the position for more than eight years and has divided the responsibilities among the staff.

The last person to hold the position on a permanent basis was San Jose sports hall of fame inductee Bert Bonanno, who also coached track and cross country for SJCC and the 1968 Olympic team in Mexico City, which included John Carlos and Tommie Smith.

“It is much simpler to have one manager for both the (athletic) side and the academic side of this department,” Vice President for Administrative Services Greg Nelson wrote in an email.

Nelson hopes to find a permanent replacement by the start of 2014.
