Speed City won three games in a row to lead the team to victory at the San Jose City College Tip-Off Basketball Tournament.

“We have been practicing hard for two-and-a-half months, and now we got to show everyone what we had,” assistant coach Jason James said. “We got a championship contender right here.”

In the final round of the eight-team, double-elimination tournament, SJCC beat Riverside Community College 75-62.

“Our big men stepped up and played really well for us, grabbing a lot of rebounds, limiting their shots to one and done, and that really sealed the game for us,” James said.

Speed City defeated Merced College in the first round 87-64 and Merritt Community College in the second round 64-59 to set them up for the final round against Riverside.

“I believe in my team, and we are going to take it far as long as we keep working hard each day and keep getting better,” freshman point guard Bobby Gray said.

Speed City will play in the Chevron Basketball Tournament at Diablo Valley College Nov. 23 through Nov. 25.
