Volleyball closes losing season

The Jaguars volleyball team wrapped up its 2012 season 2-10 in conference and 3-20 overall.

“We played with the people we had and put up a good fight against every team,” sophomore defensive specialist Felicia Segura said.

The Jaguars had a strong team that had zero drama, spent most of its time together and bonded well,” Segura said.

“The outside world sees the wins and losses while the coaching staff and the team see the intangibles: the effort and the hard work each day trying to get better individually,” head coach Rafat Tait said.

Statistics leaders: Sophomore outside hitter Cathy Nguyen had 291 assists. Sophomore libero Jessyka Quisquino had 238 digs. Quisquino also broke an
individual dig record with 41 digs in a five-set match against College of the
Sequoias on Sept. 14.

Football avoids season shut out

The SJCC football team received its first win for the last game of the 2012 season, finishing 1-4 in conference and 1-9 overall.

“It’s never about how you start. It is how you finish and who you finish with,” sophomore linebacker Adrian Blake said.

Despite a losing streak that began at the beginning of the season, the team was able to pull together and squeak by West Valley College 27-26.

This is now the second season in a row where the football team has had a losing record.

Statistic leaders: Freshman linebacker Devin Bethea led the team with 74 overall tackles, and sophomore linebacker Adrian ‘Tank’ Blake led the team with 33 solo tackles. Sophomore wide receiver Kelechi Nwadidia led the team with 39 receptions resulting in 533 yards making him fourth in the coast conference. Freshman quarterback Nick DeMartini passed for 1,028 yards.
