With a career that spans more than 25 years, Barbara Kavalier now serves as President of San Jose City College.
Here, the City College Times’ Editor-in-chief Dan Ho asked Kavalier a few question, and the following are her responses.
DH: Who has made the greatest impact on your leadership style and abilities? Why?
BK: My mentor, Dr. John Roueche, Director of the Community College Leadership Program at The University of Texas at Austin.Dr. Roueche introduced me to some of the most successful community college leaders in the nation (as part of UT’s program). Valuable lessons were learned (first hand) about all aspects of community college administration and leadership.
DH: Educational institutions are under such financial scrutiny and a push to be profitable. How do you weigh that with your desire to be a leader?
BK: As a leader you must be comfortable with the call for accountability from external entities. Community colleges throughout the nation have been faced with increased financial scrutiny and the expectation that additional funds will be generated. Fundamental to community college leadership is an in-depth understanding of fund-and-friend-raising. I have done extensive research on entrepreneurial leadership in the community college and hope to bring many lessons learned to San Jose City College.
