Jaggy’s Trading Post, a thrift club that takes clothing donations from students for students, held a free thrift event on Dec. 4 in San Jose City College’s Robert N. Chang Student Center. Free clothing and social interaction was the main focus.
“We know college student’s money is going to education [and] food,” said Charlie Evans, an 18-year-old student working for Community Outreach for the City of San Jose. “Us holding these types of events helps bring community and students [together] that don’t have the resources right now.”
There was no limit on how many free finds one could take with them.
“I feel like our event helps a lot because it’s a free event. You can bring a friend [and] meet new people that enjoy thrifting as well,” said Ariana Ramirez, an 18-year-old political science major.
Jaggy’s Trading Post events also give students the opportunity to socialize with each other.
“I feel like when you come to a place that’s new, everybody’s lost,” Ramirez said. “It’s all about finding what you like, then finding people that like the same things as you to make those connections.”
There was a variety of students who showed up to check out the event, and to meet other students on a treasure hunt.
“Even though we don’t have anything, it’s important to go to school and know that we’re not alone,” said Jessica Garcia, a 42-year-old alcohol and drugs studies major. “Anywhere you go, it’s important to have some kind of support. It helps you face day-to-day life, and the Jaggy thrift event helps.”
Students helping students is a part of daily college life.
“I feel like that’s what makes college worth it because once you build a community, it’s something to look forward to,” Ramirez said
The event also had hot chocolate, pastries and social interaction with other students, like cross-recruiting for other clubs on campus.
“Thankfully, our officers here are all very people-friendly people,” Evans said. “If we see people grabbing things that are cool, we’re like, ‘Hey, that’s a good find,’ and get them out of their comfort zone. I see people bringing their friends … and also see people bump into each other that probably have classes together.”
There is a cardboard drop box located at the Student Center for those who wish to donate. With two successful events this fall, look out for future events this spring.
