The seniors and freshmen of the cosmetology department participated in the bi-annual hair competition show on Oct. 29. This year’s theme was Cirque du Freak.
The competition started at noon, and the students were timed to do hair and make-up on their models. They were given until 2:30 p.m. to complete the first round of the competition.
The students were also judged during the process, Six judges studied their make-up application, along with their hair and nail design.
The doors opened at 6 p.m. Outside the drama department stood a line of anxious family and friends. The smell of fresh popcorn and cotton candy filled the air.
The audience walked in and was greeted with a performance from special guest, Paulo Candido, stylist and star of Bravo’s TV show, “Shear Genius.”
The crowd could not take their eyes off the stage. All were fascinated by his hair cutting technique. Hair was falling to the floor like feathers. It was like watching Edward Scissorhands.
Candido unveiled his model’s new hair and the audience gasped with amazement and gave a round of applause. As he left the stage, all that was to be seen was the cloud of hairspray he left behind.
Excitement filled the room, lights began to fl ash and music was heavily drumming as the ringmaster took the stage and announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls the Cosmetology Department presents “Cirque du Freak”.
Models numbered 1 thru 61 individually came out on stage, struck a pose and then walked though the aisles.
Round two of the runway brought out the models with their technicians that created their look.
Applause and camera flashes brought smiles to the participants faces.
During wardrobe changes the cosmetology department hosted a drawing. With the purchase of a $5 ticket you were put In a drawing for a chance to win a prize.
All prizes were donated by nearby businesses. The money collected at the drawing goes to the cosmetology department.
A special treat for the guest was a dance, choreographed by the students. Ten cosmetology students, stunned the crowd with their in sync moves and great performance.
Before the winner’s were announced the audience was given one last chance to look at all the competitors. Then, the audience voted for their favorite.
The winner’s were announced in 4 rounds, the best in hair, nails, make-up. and total look. The freshmen group and senior group each had their own winners.
The crowd’s favorite and winner of the audience vote was Senior Cassie Stern.
The show was a success, raising money for the department and showing off the talented skills of the cosmetology department.
