San Jose City College’s volleyball team maintained their losing record on Nov 7., being defeated by Ohlone College 3–0 and bringing their losing streak to 0–25. However, players refuse to give up despite setback after setback.
“I think it’s important to not be too hard on ourselves and focus on what we did right, and what did work, and capitalize on those things,” said Jaida Centeno, a player on the volleyball team.
She believed that a previous loss against West Valley College on Nov. 5 had some good, because, “I’ve improved on my serves and maintained my composure in the face of chaos.”
Shylin Simmons, a freshman on the team, highlighted the team’s strategy for improvement in spite of the losing streak.
“We try our best and look back and make lessons out of things,” Simmons said. “Since we play every team twice, we know what not to do next time [we] play against them.”
“The team can learn to maintain discipline even when they are exhausted, discouraged and lacking confidence,” says Centeno.
Head Coach David Stanton kept a positive outlook. “Even though they aren’t scoring a lot of points,” he said, “I think we are doing a pretty good job of coming together and getting excited for the little things … always trying to have a positive attitude during the game.”
After the losing game against West Valley College, Stanton said that the continued losing streak was, “probably the hardest thing they will experience this season.”
“They have played a challenging schedule and have lost some very close games, and it’s difficult to not win,” he said. “Just stay motivated.”
