A group representing San Jose City College will participate in the Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at Guadalupe River Park on Oct. 30.
Maria Gonzalez, job placement officer for the SJCC WIN/CalWorks program, is the team captain for the SJCC-One Step At A Time group she created.
“I decided to get more involved in breast cancer cure and awareness events when one of my closest friends passed away from this disease,” wrote Gonzalez in an email.
Ayantu Ketebe, an 18 year-old political science major, said her mom gets checked every year and the event is a good idea.
The 5K walk is hosted by the American Cancer Society and in 2009 approximately 30,000 people from the bay area participated according to the American Cancer Society website.
“I did a walk in high school, and they do raise a lot of awareness. It’s very positive,” said Sam Razo, a 19 year-old art major.
April Womack, 23 year-old sociology major said a lot of people support the idea.
Gonzalez said she plans to have another group next year to spread awareness. “I do hope more students and staff will be available to participate in future events.”
