The Follet Education Group took over operations on Oct. 1 to improve the service delivery to students and faculty.<br \/>\n San Jose Evergreen Community College District has operated two bookstores, one on each of its campuses.<br \/>\n\u201cOver the past several years, the stores have struggled to meet market demands and to provide exceptional service-delivery to the district\u2019s students and faculty,\u201d Douglas Smith, the vice chancellor of Administrative Services, wrote in an email. \u201cAs a result, the bookstore has not been able to remain profitable in a highly competitive and changing industry.\u201d<br \/>\nThe bookstore was facing some troubling times, so it was closed for a while.<br \/>\n \u201cWe reopened to the campus community and we\u2019re excited about being here,\u201d Greg Kiryakakis, the regional manager wrote in an email. \u201cPlanning on working with Jorge Escobar, the SJCC vice president of Administrative Services to determine how the money is best spent.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cFollet has committed a $25,000 facility investment to each bookstore. The specifics are to be mutually negotiated between Follet and each respective campus,\u201d Smith said.<br \/>\nPer Smith, Follett will provide a full range of course materials, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n\t\u2022 New textbooks<br \/>\n\t\u2022 Used textbooks<br \/>\n\t\u2022 Digital textbooks<br \/>\n\t\u2022 Custom published materials<br \/>\n\t\u2022 Rental textbooks<br \/>\n\t\u2022 General books<br \/>\n\t\u2022 Reference books<br \/>\n\t\u2022 Supplies<br \/>\n\t\u2022 Computer and technologysupplies<br \/>\n\t\u2022 General merchandise<br \/>\n\t\u2022 Emblematic clothing<br \/>\n\t\u2022 Gifts<br \/>\n\t\u2022 Greeting cards<br \/>\n\t\u2022 Convenience items<br \/>\n\t\u2022 Health and beauty aids<br \/>\n\t\u2022 Special order services<br \/>\n\t\u2022 Graduation-related merchandise<br \/>\n\t\u2022 Class rings<br \/>\n\t\u2022 Other services expected from a full-service campus bookstore<\/ul>\n<p>Smith wrote that the new company is offering goods and services to the bookstore.<br \/>\n Staff members have been moved to different places without any changes to their wages, Smith said.<br \/>\n There are concerns about staff jobs.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m worried about the transition,\u201d said Thao Nguyen, a campus bookstore staffer and student at SJCC. \u201cStudents may not care, but it\u2019s my job, so I worry.\u201d<br \/>\nSome feel the change is good for the campus.<br \/>\n\u201cI feel that the new campus bookstore renovations is going to be a refreshing change to the campus itself,\u201d said Sabrina Goodnature, a freshman at SJCC.<br \/>\n The company will help students by giving the best selections of schoolbooks.<br \/>\n\u201cThe new SJCC bookstore operator will help students by saving money on textbooks by offering choices like rental, digital and used books,\u201d Kiryakakis wrote. \u201cFollett\u2019s Rent-A-Text program saves students an average of more than 50 percent compared to purchasing new.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Staffs jobs not affected by changes at the bookstore.
