\n\u201cYou have to apply for the full-time position,\u201d said Patricia Alvarez, English professor. \u201cYou have people applying that are adjuncts on campus, plus you are competing with other people who don\u2019t live here.\u201d
\nAlvarez is an adjunct professor who teaches here at San Jose City College as well as two other community colleges in the area.
\nMany adjunct faculty teach at multiple schools to get the hours necessary to achieve an income similar to that of a full-time faculty member.
\nWithout a full-time contract, adjunct teachers work semester to semester not knowing whether their contract will be renewed.
\nThere are about 480 to 500 adjunct faculty members in the San Jose-Evergreen District, said Barbara Hanfling, executive director of the San Jose and Evergreen Federation of Teachers.
