Oscar-nominated filmmakers Ta Lessin and Carl Deal \u2013\u00a0\u201cCitizen Koch,\u201d \u201cBowling for Columbine\u201d and \u201cFahrenheit 9\/11\u201d \u2013\u00a0will speak on the issues involved in \u201cCitizen Koch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The film will be an advance screening, premiering in theaters this June.<\/p>\n<p>Labor studies major Eric Acedo, 23 is the student organizer for \u201cInocente\u201d and Sophia Said is the organizer for \u201cCointelpro 101.\u201d Each student individually organizes a film.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re going away with the whole experience of talking to filmmakers and people who are interested in the issue,\u201d Said said.<br \/>\nThere will be speaker and a Q&amp;A session after each movie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a collaborative effort,\u201d said Jim Kelly, professor of labor studies. \u201cWe linked people who are experts on the issues and encourage participation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several of the\u00a0films relate to the issues in the SJCC community. \u201cInocente\u201d is about a homeless artist, \u201cWhere Soldiers Come From\u201d is about coping with a friend going to war and \u201cCointelpro 101\u201d is about the FBI plot to suppress minority groups during the 60s and 70s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpeakers for \u2018Inocente\u2019 include Society, from Silicon Valley Debug,\u201d Acedo said. \u201cHe has been a voice for the homeless in Silicon Valley and Sandy Perry of Community Homeless Alliance Ministry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe class rekindles your spark in activism, which our generation lacks,\u201d Said said.<\/p>\n<p>Students are asked to bring a canned food item, which will be donated to charity, but admission is free.<\/p>\n<p>Kelly\u2019s class focuses on creating the film festival, but also analyzes leadership, reaching out to the community and working as a team.<\/p>\n<p>For the festival, students research about 30 movies, research guest speakers, book them to speak, write press releases for the films and write a resume with skills you achieved during the class.<\/p>\n<p>The 13th annual Reel Work 2014 Labor Film Festival will focus on economic, social and political issues.<\/p>\n<p>The festival is\u00a0planned around May 1 or May Day, which is when the eight-hour work day was established.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis event helps our event planning (skills) while creating something positive,\u201d Acedo said.<\/p>\n<p>Labor 15 is only offered in the spring.
