Softball players awarded scholarships<\/p>\n
This fall, two star players from the San Jose City College softball program will be attending the University of West Alabama with a full-ride scholarship.<\/p>\n
Sophomore catcher Treasure Rodriguez and sophomore utility player Giana Cavallaro will be taking the next step and playing Division II softball at a four-year university.<\/p>\n
Rodriguez began playing baseball at the age of six and eventually transitioned into softball. She plans on ending her softball career after graduating from UWA.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to travel the world and then have a family,\u201d Rodriguez said.<\/p>\n
She plans on majoring in criminal justice.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019d like to have a career as a probation officer,\u201d Rodriguez said.<\/p>\n
Cavallaro began playing softball at the age of five. \u201cMy grandfather was a professional baseball player,\u201d Cavallaro said. \u201cThat\u2019s how I was introduced to the sport.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cavallaro is a liberal arts major and hopes to obtain a degree in psychology.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would like to work with kids,\u201d\u00a0Cavallaro said.<\/p>\n
Their coach, Debbie Huntze-Rooney, expressed her attachment to the players.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re like family to me,\u201d\u00a0Huntze-Rooney said. \u201cI\u2019ll miss their personalities.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the field, both Rodriguez and Cavallaro are positive contributions to the team. Huntze-Rooney praised both players for their abilities, Rodriguez in particular for her leadership and skills as a batter.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe gives the team a sense of direction,\u201d Huntze-Rooney said. \u201cShe\u2019s also an excellent hitter.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cavallaro is recognized as not only a big part of the pitching staff, but a versatile player as well.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s made a huge impact on the mound,\u201d Huntze-Rooney said. \u201cShe\u2019s also a great outfielder and just a great all-around player.\u201d<\/p>\n
The two players will be moving across the country and facing a completely new atmosphere.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a great opportunity to experience a whole new world,\u201d Cavallaro said.<\/p>\n
Huntze-Rooney said she believes that it will be a great experience for them.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019ll be a bit of a culture shock,\u201d Huntze-Rooney said. \u201cBut I know they\u2019ll succeed.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
