{"id":9109,"date":"2014-02-04T16:11:41","date_gmt":"2014-02-05T00:11:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/?p=9109"},"modified":"2014-02-04T16:11:41","modified_gmt":"2014-02-05T00:11:41","slug":"2013-music-year-in-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/es\/9109\/arts-entertainment\/2013-music-year-in-review\/","title":{"rendered":"2013 music year in review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Disappointing divas and ruling rappers occupied the charts<\/p>\n<p>If music was a contest, the winner for 2013 would be Justin Timberlake.\u00a0Timberlake produced the top-selling album of the year \u201cThe 20\/20 Experience,\u201d which sold 968,000 copies in its first week.<\/p>\n<p>He also released \u201cThe 20\/20 Experience Part 2,\u201d which went to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.<\/p>\n<p>San Jose City College students agreed Timberlake had the best album this year with 27 votes in the City College Times poll for favorite album of the year<\/p>\n<p>Miley Cyrus\u2019 \u201cBangerz\u201d dominated as this year\u2019s top female album with 23 votes from SJCC students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBangerz\u201d sold approximately 260,000 copies in its debut week. \u201cWe Can\u2019t Stop\u201d peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard chart and the No. 1 \u201cWrecking Ball\u201d hit became the most watched Vevo video with more than 400 million views.<br \/>\nMacklemore and Lorde all made significant breakthroughs in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Macklemore debuted with the funky club hit \u201cThrift Shop,\u201d then made the unique and emotional track \u201cSame Love\u201d about homosexual acceptance, even though he is heterosexual.<\/p>\n<p>Lorde, 16-year-old New Zealand native, had a unique debut hit with \u201cRoyals.\u201d The song is a rebuttal against everything pop music represents, such as sex and materialism.<\/p>\n<p>Lorde\u2019s album \u201cPure Heroin\u201d peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and many critics gave the album positive reviews. Billboard critic Jason Lipshutz rated the album a 94 out of 100.<\/p>\n<p>Rivaling divas Lady Gaga and Katy Perry both released No. 1 albums this year.<\/p>\n<p>Perry\u2019s \u201cPrism\u201d was voted more favorable by SJCC Students and also racked up more sales.\u00a0Lady Gaga\u2019s \u201cArtpop\u201d features hip-hop collaborations from R.Kelly, Twista, Too Short and T.I.<\/p>\n<p>Lady Gaga\u2019s new CD has creative lyrics and a fresh production, while Perry\u2019s is more vocal and uplifting.<\/p>\n<p>Both pop powerhouses were slightly disappointing this year because they did not have the top-sellers, which many fans and critics expected.<\/p>\n<p>None were more disappointing than Britney Spears\u2019 \u201cBritney Jean,\u201d which debuted at No. 4 on the charts and sold 115,000 copies.<\/p>\n<p>Perry almost had this year\u2019s best first week sales for female artists, if it had not been for Beyonce\u2019s self-titled end-of-the-year release which shockingly sold over 600,000 copies within the first three days.<\/p>\n<p>In the rap genre, Kanye West\u2019s \u201cYeezus,\u201d got one more vote than Eminem\u2019s \u201cMarshall Mathers LP 2,\u201d with 19 and 18 votes respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Both albums went to No. 1 on the Billboard 200. With almost 800,000 copies sold, Eminem\u2019s new CD had the second-highest behind Timberlake. West\u2019s album sold 327,000 in its first week.<\/p>\n<p>Luke Bryan got his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with \u201cCrash My Party,\u201d which sold 1.3 million copies.<br \/>\nHis first three singles from the new album, \u201cCrash My Party,\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s My Kind of Night,\u201d and \u201cDrink a Beer,\u201d all peaked within the top two slots on the Country Billboard chart.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arctic Monkeys and Avril Lavigne all received seven votes in the SJCC poll.<\/p>\n<p>Arctic Monkeys, an English indie rock band, released new album \u201cAM.\u201d With this release, they became the first independent label band to debut at No. 1 in the U.K.<\/p>\n<p>Lavigne created what may be the best album of her career with the self-titled album.<br \/>\nShe returns to her punk princess roots with fun summery anthems \u201cHere\u2019s to Never Growing Up\u201d and \u201cSippin\u2019 on Sunshine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Yeah Yeah Yeahs released \u201cMosquito,\u201d the band\u2019s fourth LP. The band retreats from their last album\u2019s mainstream dance sound to more experimental, garage-band tracks such as \u201cSacrilege\u201d and \u201cArea 52.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When people look back on music this past year, most likely a naked Miley Cyrus riding a \u201cWrecking Ball,\u201d a \u201cSuit and Tie\u201d wearing Justin Timberlake, several top-selling rappers (Eminem, Kanye West, Drake, Lil\u2019 Wayne and Macklemore) and Beyonce surprising 17 songs accompanied with music videos will all come to mind.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, many big releases couldn\u2019t pass 300,000 sold copies, thus not living up to expectations.
