Women’s volleyball team plagued by errors<\/p>\n
San Jose City College\u2019s women\u2019s volleyball has had an intriguing season so far.<\/p>\n
Judging the team\u2019s performance by its win-loss record of 1-6, does not show the full reality of what is going on this season.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are a new group; 9 members of our team of 11 are new to the team,\u201d said Felicia Segura, defensive specialist.<\/p>\n
Segura is leading the team this season in kills per set averaging 2.67.<\/p>\n
The team\u2019s 791 total attacks, so far, are about 10 percent higher than the opponents it faces on average.<\/p>\n
Jessica Byerly leads the team with an attempted attack total of 120.<\/p>\n
She is also responsible for leading the team in errors, with 30 errors, resulting in a hit percent of -.058.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven though we lost, there were a lot of great runs,\u201d said Haley Leonard, student and volleyball spectator, referring to the game against Ca\u00f1ada Oct. 2.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the biggest issue was referees calling a little harder against our team.\u201d<\/p>\n
This team is fierce and needs to work on focusing on eliminate the errors.<\/p>\n
Coach Tait Rafat said that height is a huge disadvantage for his team.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have no dedicated setter. \u2026 We have had to make some good athletes into setters,\u201d Rafat said. \u201cAs a result we are losing offense at those positions; that is hurting us right now. As they get more comfortable in those positions it will help our offense.\u201d<\/p>\n
The women\u2019s volleyball team seems poised to make a strong showing toward the end of the season.<\/p>\n
This can only happen if they get the focus necessary to keep the fierceness they currently play with and eliminate the errors and tough calls that is plaguing the team this season.<\/p>\n
