Classes can be\u00a0overwhelming. For some students at San Jose\u00a0City College, lectures are not helpful enough and questions cannot always be addressed. Professors have limited office hours and cannot reach their students.<\/p>\n

Peer-Led Team Learning is a program that helps students with their classes and instills good study habits. PLTL\u00a0is offering five new classes this semester.<\/p>\n

The need for extra help is apparent\u00a0when looking at the many fliers for tutoring placed across the campus, said chemistry professor Madeline Adamczeski.<\/p>\n

The students and leaders are in a friendly environment.<\/p>\n

Ruby Abd\u00a0Latif, 21, occupational therapy major, said her\u00a0students \u201clisten to others, give different perspectives with lots of support, share notes, share knowledge and form study buddies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Abigail Villarreal, 20, nursing major, said her\u00a0leader for Chemistry 32A\u00a0made studying easier. Not only was her leader helpful, but also others in the workshop were willing to help each other.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe guide students as peers, not as lecturers,\u201d said David Zarate, 25, nursing major.<\/p>\n

Students in the program\u2019s workshops work in small groups.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe show them how to do it, and they do it them-selves,\u201d said Phat Huynh, 21, computer science major.<\/p>\n

The program is aimed\u00a0at science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses.<\/p>\n

The PLTL\u00a0sessions are known as workshops. Students who have passed the class from previous\u00a0semesters supervise the workshops and are referred\u00a0to as leaders. The leaders know from a student perspective what topics are overlooked\u00a0or are too detailed.<\/p>\n

Leaders go through an intensive two-day training session between semesters. The training gives the leaders tools to facilitate\u00a0their workshops. This training also helps the leaders become more effective in communication, cooperation and understanding.<\/p>\n

By using these skills and knowledge, the leaders are able to\u00a0help their students.<\/p>\n

The program provides the incentive to join by offering up to five percent extra credit.<\/p>\n

For some students, by the end of the semester, the five percent is negligible. The influence helped students get a letter grade of A without the five percent boost.<\/p>\n

PLTL\u00a0was founded\u00a0in the early 1990s by David K. Gosser, Jr., Director of the Center for Peer-Led Team Learning at City College of New York. The program expanded to SJCC\u00a0in the summer of 1999 because of Adamczeski.<\/p>\n

In 2010 PLTL\u00a0was funded by the\u00a0Metas\u00a0program, which helped spread the program outside of Adamczeski\u2019s chemistry classes and into other chemistry classes.<\/p>\n

The additional, alternative aid of the PLTL program helps once-struggling students grasp concepts and work through the confusion.<\/p>\n
