{"id":6970,"date":"2013-02-01T14:50:08","date_gmt":"2013-02-01T22:50:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/?p=6970"},"modified":"2013-02-19T14:39:47","modified_gmt":"2013-02-19T22:39:47","slug":"lady-jags-focus-on-improvement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/es\/6970\/sports\/lady-jags-focus-on-improvement\/","title":{"rendered":"Lady Jags focus on improvement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The San Jose City College women\u2019s basketball team (3-4, 9-12) prepares to face the first-place team, Mission College, and its dominating force of players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(We) play our game,\u201d assistant coach Fritzie Villegas wrote in an email. \u201cWe&#8217;ve got to worry about us and what our team goals are for that day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even though SJCC guard Aiwekoe Okungbowa produced another double-double this season with 29 points and 15 rebounds, the Lady Jags lost on Jan. 11, 80-70, which was the last time they played Mission College this season on Mission\u2019s home court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(We\u2019ll do the) same as we do for any team, preparing to execute our stuff more effectively and not make some of the mistakes we have been making,\u201d head coach Terri Oberg wrote in an email.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it was not Mission\u2019s large crowd of overzealous fans, Felicia Anderson\u2019s 26 points or 6-foot 6-inch Gabrielle Ludwig\u2019s 10 points and 10 rebounds that won the game for them.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, according to the official statistics site for California Community College Athletics, SJCC was statistically better, shooting 42 percent from the field, 71 percent from the free-throw line and totaling 39 rebounds against Mission\u2019s 35 percent shooting, 47 percent from the line and 28 rebounds.<\/p>\n<p>It was SJCC\u2019s four assists and 17 turnovers. Mission, on the other hand, had 10 assists, zero turnovers.<\/p>\n<p>Some parts of the college-athlete community spoke out, saying the presence of the 6-foot 6-inch, 50-year old, ex-Navy seaman, ex-male collegiate basketball player, Ludwig, had a lot to do with their victory.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of SJCC players, who asked not be identified, said the tempo of the game changed once she checked-in, and they were forced to double-team Ludwig, which left Mission\u2019s top scorer, Anderson, open for an easy shot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAside from (which team) has the most points by the end of the night, it\u2019s whoever played the hardest,\u201d wrote Villegas in an email about SJCC\u2019s loss to Mission. \u201cWhen you\u2019re 6&#8217;7&#8243;, you will make a difference regardless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Lady Jags have mentioned they are not intimidated by the size or scoring potential of the first-place team and plan on spoiling Mission\u2019s attempt to remain undefeated in the Coast Conference-South.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur team is focused on improving as a unit,\u201d Villegas wrote. \u201cIf the team works hard and has fun, then winning will take care of itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SJCC will face Mission on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 5 p.m. at Jaguars Arena in San Jose.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The San Jose City College women\u2019s basketball team (3-4, 9-12) prepares to face the first-place team, Mission College, and its dominating force of players. \u201c(We) play our game,\u201d assistant coach Fritzie Villegas wrote in an email. \u201cWe&#8217;ve got to worry about us and what our team goals are for that day.\u201d Even though SJCC guard&#8230;<\/p>","protected":false},"author":62,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9],"tags":[],"staff_name":[606],"class_list":["post-6970","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-sports","staff_name-patrick-loera"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.8 -
