The editors discuss the front-page content of the Wednesday, Nov. 14 edition.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The San Jose Mercury News opened its doors to San Jose City College journalism students on Nov. 13.<\/p>\n<p>A tour of the Mercury News revealed the remaining demand for print newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>The Mercury News produces approximately 200,000 newspapers Monday through Saturday, with a 50,000 increase on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The Pulitzer Prize-winning San Jose Mercury News\u00a0continues to feed its readers in spite of rampant newspaper\u00a0closures by moving forward in the digital age, maintaining a website and an iPad app.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe essence of our business is bringing news to the people, not necessarily as a physical copy on a doorstep,\u201d said Mercury News Prepress Manager Gianna Tabuena-Frolli.<\/p>\n<p>Tabuena-Frolli remains confident in the life of the\u00a0Mercury News because it began cost cutting sooner than others in the newspaper industry.<\/p>\n<p>The company has also downsized the number of local newspapers in order to meet the demand for larger circulations, such as the Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Sheppard, the editor-in-chief of the City College Times newspaper, observed the effects of the downsized\u00a0company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a ghost town,\u201d Sheppard said.<\/p>\n<p>The measures the newspaper has taken to remain afloat did convince Sheppard of the Mercury\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsidering their production of other circulations and their online presence, it seems like they have a good safety net for circulation reduction.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The San Jose Mercury News opened its doors to San Jose City College journalism students on Nov. 13.
