{"id":4548,"date":"2012-10-23T23:51:11","date_gmt":"2012-10-24T06:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/?p=4548"},"modified":"2012-12-13T18:21:16","modified_gmt":"2012-12-14T02:21:16","slug":"the-best-kept-secret-at-sjcc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/es\/4548\/campus-life\/the-best-kept-secret-at-sjcc\/","title":{"rendered":"The best kept secret at SJCC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Student Health Center serves the entire campus community, regardless of a student\u2019s financial status.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeventy-five percent of our students do not have health insurance and the sad part is that if they have an illness they may stop their education,\u201d said Janet Chang, director of Student Health Services. \u201cWe want to make sure that these students who have an unstable home life still have access to health care and still have educational continuity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SHS constantly assesses student needs and develops new programs to meet these unmet needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI get involved with assessment,\u201d Chang said. \u201cWe try to look at why students do not succeed in school; we look at these reasons why and we try to reflect those reasons into the services that we provide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Personal one-on-one counseling is also available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPersonal counseling with Student Health Services allowed me to overcome or deal with my anxiety and depression and allowed me to come to class every day, face life and be who I am,\u201d said Tina O\u2019Neil, a personal counseling recipient. \u201cNow my life is positive where before it was really negative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An additional service of the SHS is smoking cessation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI noticed that on campus there were so many faculty and students who smoked. I decided to start this program,\u201d said clinic nurse Janet Reid.<\/p>\n<p>When I first met Jan I wasn\u2019t really sure how I was going to stop smoking or what she could do for me,\u201d said ex-smoker Cindy Black. \u201cI relied on her support, she gave me the strength to quit. If I didn\u2019 t have able to do it, so it was absolutely critical. This program helped save my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What is discussed between the student and SHS stays with SHS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we develop a special relationship with students,\u201d said Toni Moos, student medical director. \u201cWhen they come in, it is confidential, you get to do a lot of educating and a lot of counseling, and I feel like I am making a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am privileged to work in a field where my personal philosophy is congruent with my work.
