{"id":3446,"date":"2012-05-26T18:15:03","date_gmt":"2012-05-27T01:15:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/?p=3446"},"modified":"2012-12-16T17:19:36","modified_gmt":"2012-12-17T01:19:36","slug":"sekrets-shine-with-synth-steeped-songs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/es\/3446\/arts-entertainment\/sekrets-shine-with-synth-steeped-songs\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Sekrets\u2019 shine with synth-steeped songs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/arts-entertainment\/sekrets-shine-with-synth-steeped-songs\/attachment\/page-6-may-22\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3449\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-3449\" title=\"PAGE 6 May 22\" src=\"http:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/PAGE-6-May-22.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"108\" height=\"522\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Heartbreak, loneliness and regret make for a rough weekend; but with the help of dark lyrics and catchy melodies, Matt Skiba and the Sekrets turn the topics into a musical masterpiece in their May 8 release, \u201cBabylon,\u201d their debut album.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Sekrets,&#8221; which includes AFI bassist Hunter Burgan and My Chemical Romance touring drummer Jarrod Alexander, is the side project of Alkaline Trio front man Skiba.<\/p>\n<p>Skiba\u2019s ties to the Trio are apparent in many of the album\u2019s tracks, especially in the heartbreak anthem \u201cLuciferian Blues,\u201d a song brimming with distorted guitars and macabre imagery, and \u201cOlivia,\u201d which verbalizes hopelessness with grim metaphors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe End of Joy\u201d also evokes the Trio, employing a pulsing verse and soaring chorus, both flavored by elaborate bass and drum fills, to mourn the \u201cThe end of joy \/ The death of truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Skiba is not afraid to make departures from his past with the melodic pop punk songs \u201cVoices\u201d and \u201cAll Fall Down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A much more dramatic digression from Skiba\u2019s Trio roots is made in the \u201980s-influenced, clap-filled \u201cFalling Like Rain,\u201d a nostalgia-themed song complete with a synthesizer solo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow the Hell Did We Get Here?\u201d also uses synths, starting in the introduction where a spacey synth line accompanies rattling hihats and an eerie piano, a nod to the song\u2019s horror novel influence, \u201cHouse of Leaves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Skiba explores new ground lyrically on the album with \u201cYou,\u201d which he said in an interview with AMP magazine is his first love song.<\/p>\n<p>Another emotional song is \u201cHaven\u2019t You,\u201d a song, boasting a funky synth line and an arpeggiated guitar part, about overcoming loss to find strength.<\/p>\n<p>The only acoustic song on the album, \u201cAngel of Deaf,\u201d has a similar theme; however, it takes a more negative approach with Skiba singing \u201cOur dreams were no lie \/ They just never seem to come true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The album\u2019s lyrical beauty and musical diversity, combined with Skiba\u2019s powerful vocal performance, make \u201cBabylon\u201d an essential for any Matt Skiba fan, earning the album five out of five stars.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Heartbreak, loneliness and regret make for a rough weekend; but with the help of dark lyrics and catchy melodies, Matt Skiba and the Sekrets turn the topics into a musical masterpiece in their May 8 release, \u201cBabylon,\u201d their debut album.
