{"id":3006,"date":"2012-05-08T22:56:55","date_gmt":"2012-05-09T05:56:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/?p=3006"},"modified":"2013-02-27T23:05:41","modified_gmt":"2013-02-28T07:05:41","slug":"the-art-of-beauty-on-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/es\/3006\/campus-life\/the-art-of-beauty-on-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"The art of beauty on campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Esthetics Program offers multiple skin care services to San Jose City College students, faculty and friends.<\/p>\n<p>The program does facials and makeup for people seeking employment offers, special treatments for deaf women and educates about the importance of skin care to students.<\/p>\n<p>Esthetics instructor Yelena Lipilina is in charge of the Esthetics Program.<\/p>\n<p>She has earned a CIDESCO\u00a0(Comit\u00e9\u00a0International d\u2019Esth\u00e9tique et de Cosm\u00e9tologie) diploma. It is recognized as the most advanced certification in the field of esthetics and beauty therapy in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Lipilina\u00a0has been teaching\u00a0at SJCC since 2005 and has spent the past 25 years teaching at other schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeaching is my passion; it\u2019s something I\u2019ve always wanted to do,\u201d Lipilina\u00a0said. \u201cI come prepared\u00a0for class every day; I provide the best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lipilina\u00a0has worked at the Elizabeth Arden Salon, Visage Medical Day Spa, Mr. Lee Salon and Spa and the Lanc\u00f4me Beauty Institute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is very well-known in the industry; she has worked for Elizabeth Arden,\u201d said Holly Zoffoli, 39, esthetics student.<\/p>\n<p>The senior class of the program runs the esthetics club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone works together to raise money for graduation. The senior class leaves a contribution to the program behind when they leave,\u201d said Leti Horta, 36, esthetics student.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The club contributes to the community; it has hosted fundraisers for abused women,&#8221; Lipilina said. \u201cOur club is successful because we have continuity of people who run the club.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The skin care clinic offers a professional experience in facials, waxing, eyebrow arching, paraffin hand treatments and daytime or evening makeup application.<\/p>\n<p>Students can earn a Certificate of Achievement in Esthetics in a two-semester program with 21 hours of class a week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a strict program; students can\u2019t miss more than three days,\u201d Lipilina said. \u201cOur high graduation rate speaks loudly about our success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students are eligible to take the State Board Esthetics examination after completion of the program.<\/p>\n<p>The State Board of Cosmetology requires each student have 600 hours of instruction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithin two weeks, we were hands-on in the program. It is a great class,\u201d esthetics student Juli Silva, 54, said.<\/p>\n<p>Lipilina said the program offers a summer course that provides students with job training and tips for job interviews; it is perfect practice for the state board exam and for practical skills.<\/p>\n<p>The program provides less expensive, quality treatments in a full-scale salon, Lipilina said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a supportive administration; they give great equipment for the students and provide\u00a0a wonderful service,\u201d Lipilina said. \u201cWe\u2019ve been hit with cuts but grateful that the program is still running.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After completion of the program, students will be prepared for entry-level positions\u00a0as an esthetician, makeup artist, spa technician or salon owner.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Esthetics Program offers multiple skin care services to San Jose City College students, faculty and friends.
