{"id":17945,"date":"2025-05-05T10:31:56","date_gmt":"2025-05-05T17:31:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/?p=17945"},"modified":"2025-05-05T11:33:43","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T18:33:43","slug":"how-shrinking-class-sizes-affect-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/es\/17945\/feature\/how-shrinking-class-sizes-affect-students\/","title":{"rendered":"How Shrinking Class Sizes Affect Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Jose City College offers, \u201cdiverse programs designed to expedite your graduation,\u201d with a variety of majors and classes available, but what happens when things go wrong?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some students are facing delayed transfer and graduation because of reduced class availability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zaira Meza and Erica Ciprez are second and third year Bio-Chem majors who noticed a problem during registration for the fall 2025 semester. When course options were posted a few days before the registration period, Meza realized that Bio 4B was only offered at SJCC in the spring. For fall, the class could only be taken at Evergreen Valley College, SJCC\u2019s sister school. It merely offered one section, which conflicted with another class. With time ticking, Meza did what she could.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo I started a petition, not just for my case but for all the other students as well who are also realizing this,\u201d Meza said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn order for our voices to be heard, we have created a petition for those willing to take a stand,\u201d it reads. <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSfOAA1KgHiHcNmQJeCWVyrhZDNVCMFyh9C3yeex4yqT7ZDmgg\/viewform\">The petition<\/a> started in mid-March and has gained 55 signatures thus far.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meza has also met with the dean and the Associated Student Government, who have considered the issue. (Natalia Rodriguez)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meza and Ciprez are concerned about students being out of the loop when it comes to class availability, even for those required for their major. Both of them said that more needs to be done to keep students aware. Meza suggested letting new students know when and what classes are available during their first registration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Dean needs to realize the student\u2019s voice is most important,\u201d said Ciprez.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karen Hurst, a professor in the math and science department, is the instructor for Bio 4A. She said that there are legitimate reasons for gaps in courses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf we don\u2019t have enough students sign up for a class, it gets canceled,\u201d she said. \u201cA section of 4B was canceled one semester &#8230; at the last minute due to low enrollment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hurst has noticed low enrollment rates since the pandemic, which creates a layered issue. Students are left to discover gaps in class availability too late, creating educational delays, and instructors risk losing their classes if they can\u2019t fill their classrooms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless, Hurst said she supports Meza\u2019s petition and believes change can be made.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI know that student pressure helped to reinstate some canceled classes during the past intersession,\u201d she said, \u201cSo I think this effort has a chance to influence Bio 4B as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>San Jose City College offers, \u201cdiverse programs designed to expedite your graduation,\u201d with a variety of majors and classes available, but what happens when things go wrong?
