In response, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SJCC has partnered with Second Harvest of Silicon Valley to open the Jaguar Market to support students with free food<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SJCC provides students with dairy, frozen meat, and fresh produce which are donated from local grocery stores such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safeway and Target to name a few <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, all of which are free to students. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Rene Alvarez Dean of Academic Success and Student Equity who directs Basic Needs services and resources explained that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the help of The California Community College Chancellor&#8217;s Office (CCCO) SJCC also receives grants for $25 thousand each semester to purchase food from suppliers such as Amazon, the food purchased with these grants is then distributed at Jaguar Market.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Luna Abdul, a second-year psychology major, this resource helps him in his daily life: \u201cI think it\u2019s great, it takes money off your grocery bill\u201d. Another Engineering student, Randy Hernandez finds value in the market\u2019s location, as well as its most obvious function, \u201cI don\u2019t have to pay, it\u2019s free,\u201d said Hernandez.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the Jaguar Market offers free food, students note that the market should not be used as a complete replacement for a traditional grocery store. The market is closed from Friday to Sunday, so students must plan ahead to stock up for the weekend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Enrique Hernandez, a Biology Student and also a Jaguar\u2019s Market Staff the peak hours are between 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00\u00a0 to 4:00 pm,\u00a0 during which, they frequently run out of food. \u201cWe may not have as much but we are a free food service,\u201d said Hernandez.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWe just plan out what days we take out what [donations] and space it out [to give] everybody a chance for food.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17551\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17551\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17551\" src=\"https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_9329-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_9329-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_9329-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_9329-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_9329-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_9329-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_9329.jpg 2001w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17551\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Different bread options on the shelves in the Jaguar Market.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdul explained that when he shops at Safeway (one of Jaguar Market\u2019s primary distributors), the quality of the food is fresh and that he seldom sees mold spots. He does not feel the same standard carries over to the food sold on campus at the Jaguar Market. \u201cYou have to check if it\u2019s expired, you have to bring it to their attention,\u201d said Abdul.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though the food is donated, the Jaguar\u2019s Market personnel try to be cautious with the quality of the food that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefoodbank.org\/aboutus\/where-our-food-comes-from\/#:~:text=We%20also%20swap%20with%20other,be%20used%20by%20us%20quickly\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they\u00a0 provide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWe personally sort out the ones that look really bad, we throw them out and then we put out the ones that look okay,\u201d Hernandez said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaguar Market Program Coordinator, Daniela Mu\u00f1oz Martinez discussed her strategy to change popular connotations around the shelf life of food. \u201cWhat we do there is we try to eliminate things [food] being tossed in the garbage that are not unsafe to eat, that may just not be at its peak.\u201d She explained that the Jaguar Market is following the United States Department of Agriculture\u2019s (USDA) suggestions to limit food waste.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of this campaign focuses on clearing up misconceptions around food labels, \u201cwhen you see those \u201cbest buy\u201d, \u201csell buy\u201d, and \u201cexpired buy\u201d labels it doesn\u2019t mean that the food is unsafe or unhealthy to eat. It just means that its peak is now coming down.\u201d The USDA\u2019s website says that they have suggested food brands stop using \u201cexpired by\u201d labels and instead use \u201cbest buy\u201d labels to more accurately articulate the state of the product. The USDA does not suggest eating food with \u201csigns of spoilage\u201d, including mold. After Publication Dr. Rene Alvarez provided the City Times with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shfb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Code-Date-Guidelines-for-Partner-Agencies.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Final Code\/Date Extension Guidelines For End Users<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which he said all Jaguar Market employees are trained on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College Times found that select breads, such as Whole Wheat Artesano, were labeled as expired and some had mold spots. When asked about this Hernandez said, \u201cIf they do end up having a few spots here and there it\u2019s because us workers will miss a spot on the edge of a tomato or bread and that\u2019s when we apologize.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hernandez explained that Jaguar Market is only a distributor of food that has been donated to them. \u201cWe are required to tell people that [our food is] from Second Harvest,\u201d meaning that most of what is donated is \u201cfood that either doesn\u2019t get sold or is too ugly,\u201d said Hernandez.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the semester rolls along the Jaguar Market continues to offer students free food and is located in the Robert N. Chang Student Center on the first floor. Operating hours are from 9 am to 7 pm Monday through Thursday.
