{"id":16531,"date":"2022-05-04T10:31:38","date_gmt":"2022-05-04T17:31:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/16531\/news\/students-services-on-campus\/"},"modified":"2022-05-23T20:33:36","modified_gmt":"2022-05-24T03:33:36","slug":"students-services-on-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/es\/16531\/campus-life\/students-services-on-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"SJCC services assist students on campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Jose City College has many opportunities for students to get help on campus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On of these is the information desk located in the Student Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf students need their student IDs, this is where they would come with copies of proof of registration to get that,\u201d said Program coordinator Xiomara Martinez. \u201cAlso, they are able to get\u00a0 the VTA Eco Bus Passes here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Martinez also said that the information desk offers a variety of other services including campus tours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo tours for students who are thinking about coming here, this is where they check in,\u201d Xiomara said. \u201cIf you need to know where to find the classrooms, questions about registration, where to find a department, you\u2019re looking for someone, definitely check in here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jaguar Market that is also located <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the Student Center.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe offer daily snacks and weekly shopping. All students can come here for drinks, some chips, burritos, soups or whatever we have available,\u201d said Cruz Munoz, 21, SJCC dental hygiene major. \u201cFor weekly shopping, we offer eggs, milk, chicken, vegetables and fruits. We also have canned food and soups.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jaguar Market may help students who have a tight budget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think it\u2019s very helpful for all students because some students live by themselves so they have to manage their budget,\u201d Munoz said. \u201cThis is a perfect way to support them. In my perspective, it helps me a lot, saves a lot of money. If they (students) want to invest in other stuff, it helps a lot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sjcc.libguides.com\/online-support\">The Cesar E.Chavez Library<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers in-person and virtual library services for students,\u00a0 faculty and all district employees in the spring 2022 session, according to the SJCC Chavez Library online website.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Library\u2019s hours for the spring semester are \u00a0Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.\u00a0 It is closed on Saturdays and Sundays as well as campus holidays.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The campus library is also offering zero-cost tutoring services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If students need tutoring or would like to review what they learned in class, they can take a look at the tutor schedule and pop into a Zoom room or stop by the Learning Resource Center on the first floor of the library for in-person tutoring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Subjects include math, statistics, physics, chemistry, accounting, Spanish and essay writing. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1_uWKMXT6FUqxV5iUS4CL6L3SlklEFuFH\/edit#gid=2009628162\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click here for the tutor schedules.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Student Accessibility Services is located in the Student Center in Room 106.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are the SAS, which is the Student Accessibility Services. The one way you can use our service is that you have a verification of disability,\u201d said SAS program assistant Martha Cazares. \u201cThat\u2019s how we intake our students, with an application verification of disability.\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SAS also offers specialized counseling, note-taking services, interpreters and educational plans. We also help with transfer to four-year universities,\u201d Cazares said. \u201cSAS\u2019s main goal is to make all content in class accessible to students. If you are deaf, you can have closed-captioning. If you are blind, to have things, it\u2019ll be given to you in the format that you understand, like something auditory. If you are in a wheelchair, you will be given adjustable seating in class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students can also access health services in the Student Center.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt the Student Health Services, all the students pay a student health fee, which covers some of the services that we provide here but not all the services,\u201d said registered nurse Kathleen Barzegar.\u00a0 \u201cWe have a physician that\u2019s on staff, and she sees patients by appointments on Wednesdays and Thursdays.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barzegar said there are students that also come to Health Services that have medical coverage under the Fampact Program, which provides family planning services to eligible low-income students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey can see the doctor for well women, sexually transmitted interfaction testing, pregnancy testing,\u201d Barzegar said. \u201cFor students not covered under the Fampact program, we have low cost pregnancy testing, lab testing for sexually transmitted diseases or other lab testing the doctors feel might be nessasry during the visit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For students who want to quit smoking, Health Services has a smoking cessation program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf there are students who are used to tobacco products or use nicotine products, vapes, and cigarettes, we have counseling that helps them stop smoking. That\u2019s available free to students,\u201d Barzegar said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Services also offers birth control counseling, vision screening and mental health services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have a case manager for mental health services.
