{"id":13749,"date":"2020-03-25T21:29:38","date_gmt":"2020-03-26T04:29:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/13749\/news\/take-care-of-your-mental-health-during-covid-19\/"},"modified":"2020-06-14T23:42:08","modified_gmt":"2020-06-15T06:42:08","slug":"take-care-of-your-mental-health-during-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/es\/13749\/news\/take-care-of-your-mental-health-during-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Mental health care during coronavirus outbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Social isolation is one of the effective ways to prevent COVID-19 from spreading, but when it comes to students having to stay at home, the mind of the individual might get clouded with unwanted thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness, \u201cRecognizing and acting on mental distress in these uncertain times is key to lessening the impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As each day passes, feeling isolated affects many people mentally, creating negative space in their minds and health.<\/p>\n<p>Mental health is a topic now being discussed among peers; and while panic arises due to COVID-19, we must remember to take care of ourselves and others.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, \u201cTaking care of yourself, your friends and your family can help you cope with stress. Helping others cope with their stress can also make your community stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adapting to the new shelter-in-place routine has been difficult for Evergreen Community College student and child development major Karla Lopez, 21.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been hard to adjust quickly to school being online now, and I feel like I\u2019m missing out on events and seeing my friends,\u201d \u00a0Lopez said. &#8220;It\u2019s getting quite lonely being isolated at home. Being isolated will impact the way many people feel and act in times in need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs someone who has been dealing with depression, it&#8217;s been hard to just stay home because I usually have an escape route, whether it be the movies, bookstore or coffee shop,\u201d said Destiny Gibson, 21, an San Jose City College student majoring in psychology.<\/p>\n<p>Feelings of loneliness can be healed properly with help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt my home, it\u2019s been uncomfortable getting used to (the isolation), but I\u2019ve been connecting with my friends online. That has helped me get through this a lot,\u201d said Sandy Madrid, 21, an San Jose State University majoring in sociology. \u201cI\u2019ve been reminding myself to be grateful for what I have and for the people who I\u2019ve connected with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To reduce stress, try these tips suggested by the CDC:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take breaks from the news and social media since it can lead to anxiety or fear<\/li>\n<li>\u000bPick up new or old hobbies and do activities that bring joy<\/li>\n<li>Connect with friends via texting, calling or video chatting.
