Ruben Chavez talks to kids on April 14 about the field of law enforcement.<\/figcaption><\/figure>More than 750 kindergartners from Alum Rock School District visited San Jose City College for the sixth annual Kindercaminata, a children\u2019s career day, on April 14 to celebrate The Day of the Young Child. Jennifer Neil, Director of Student Life, said that Kindercaminata has opened the eyes of many individuals about what SJCC and Evergreen Valley College are all about.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the benefits over the past years shows a college coming together to provide an opportunity for the kindergartners and their parents to see what community college life is like,\u201d Neil said.<\/p>\n

Neil said that people have questioned why the focus of the career day has been on young children, rather than high schoolers, for a few years.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can never start too early with the focus of college,\u201d Neil said. \u201cThe partnership with Alum Rock School District started about six years ago, and I think everyone agrees that it would be nice to have this opportunity for all students: elementary, middle and high schoolers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSJCC has mainly worked within the college to try to get all the programs and departments on board with setting up booths. It is a lot of SJCC\u2019s time but hardly any money Alum Rock School District is funding 99 percent of this year\u2019s event.\u201d<\/p>\n

The children, wearing caps that read \u201cI\u2019m going to college,\u201d moved in groups to different stations, including cosmetology, math, reading, sports, and the police and fire departments.<\/p>\n

Lt. Ruben Chavez of the SJCC police said he came to provide the children with the opportunity to be exposed to different careers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey never get a chance to talk to the police or sit in a police car,\u201d Chavez said. \u201cThe kids are excited, but it\u2019s exciting to us as well. The kids are so curious!\u201d<\/p>\n

In the gym, student volunteers engaged the children with different types of sports.<\/p>\n

Alejandra Hernandez, 19, a kinesiology major, was there representing the Lady Jaguar softball team.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to give back to the community and help the kids who want to play sports,\u201d she said. \u201cWe all have fun playing with the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kathy De Arana, a kindergarten teacher for Alum Rock, said that even though her class is young she has been able to include the trip to SJCC into her curriculum.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe kids really looked forward to coming,\u201d De Arana said. \u201cWe talked about what we want to be when we grow up and that you may need to go to college.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael Casas, SJCC\u2019s Director of Student Activities, said the children enjoyed the stations because they were able to get involved with hands on experiences.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe engage the community,\u201d Casas said. \u201cI like to see the big smiles on their faces.\u201d<\/p>\n

Casas pointed to the necklaces that the children wore, which said what they want to be when they grow up, and said, \u201cThose are the hopes and dreams of the future.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
