Super Sus is a Ukrainian YouTuber recording his adventures in these mysterious places. He calls his viewers the Pubertat, which is a slang term for a group of young people.<\/p>\n
Covered in soot and mud, Sus erupted in a roar of triumph as the door to a vault opened. Sus, also called Susanin or Vasya, is known for his charisma, signature appearance and unbreakable confidence.<\/p>\n
He speaks Russian and Ukrainian in his videos, but English subtitles are provided as well.<\/p>\n
An avid adventurer, Sus plunges into the depths of any and all subterranean structures, though his favorites seem to be subway systems.<\/p>\n
His cameraman Dima and the viewers are constantly baffled by his knowledge and desire to visit these strange places.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe is pretty weird and brave,\u201d said Orestes Portela, computer science major. \u201cI think most people would try to avoid those dirty and dark structures.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sus\u2019 curiosity, love of adventure and ability to leave his zone of comfort might be the initiative to get viewers energized to do something new in their field of interest.<\/p>\n
\u201cTake a backpack, put it on your shoulders and leave your house,\u201d Sus said in an interview, encouraging people to leave their comfort zone. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter where, just go.\u201d<\/p>\n
Not all would embrace his actions, but many agree with his methods.<\/p>\n
In order to leave his comfort zone, Gerardo Gomez, undeclared major, said he \u201cjumps right in.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIf I find that something is making me feel nervous and uncomfortable,\u201d Gomez added, \u201cI take that as a sign to just do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The greatest point of discomfort in new situations is usually the start. If that is overcome, what remains is less taxing.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel bold and invincible,\u201d said Silvia Saucedo, communications studies major, \u201cwhen listening to I\u2019ll Try Anything Once by The Strokes.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said she wants to feel comfortable leaving her zone of comfort.<\/p>\n
One of the most dangerous places Sus went to was the Pripyat exclusion zone, the site of the catastrophic Chernobyl nuclear meltdown in 1986 that irradiated the surrounding environment and poisoned millions.<\/p>\n
At the start of the adventure, Dima sees Sus pouring himself vodka and asks:
\n\u201cSusanin, will you be able to complete the journey if you drink that?\u201d
\n\u201cWhy wouldn\u2019t I be able to? I won\u2019t make it if I don\u2019t,\u201d Sus said. \u201cThe vodka stops the absorption of radiation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sus explained his plan to pass the guards undetected by going in under the cover of darkness, first entering a sunflower field and then through a swamp.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe sun is setting and the zone is a few kilometers away,\u201d Sus said in the vlog. \u201cWe need to go that direction.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sus and Dima waded neck deep through the swamp carrying their clothes and supplies above their heads.
\nSus\u2019 short stature left viewers worrying that he would drown, pulled down by quicksand or a mutated catfish.<\/p>\n
The team got lost, but Sus relieved their fears by saying \u201cnow I\u2019ll navigate by a star,\u201d to which Dima asked, \u201cWhich one?\u201d
\n\u201cI\u2019m the star,\u201d Sus said. \u201cLet\u2019s go.\u201d<\/p>\n
The following morning, Sus found the junkyard where firefighters and volunteers left the equipment used to clear the Chernobyl fallout.<\/p>\n
A geiger counter he was carrying, used to measure radiation, clicked incessantly.
\n\u201cF—, dude \u2014 we can\u2019t stay here for long, look at these readings,\u201d Sus whispered to Dima, horrified by the peril they were in.<\/p>\n
Sus is incredibly enigmatic, constantly altering the details of his background. He often talks about historic events that he was not alive for in the first person, such as World War II or the Vietnam War.<\/p>\n
Sus has a scar on his face which he attributes to a firecracker that exploded prematurely when he lit it like a cigarette in his mouth.<\/p>\n
One of his recurring anecdotes has to do with being captured during a war between Vietnam and Chernihiv, a Ukrainian city. According to Sus, he and his comrades were being starved and tortured, yet he was able to flee.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey wrote about my escape from the concentration camps in the newspapers,\u201d Sus said in a vlog. \u201cCan you imagine what happened to the high ranking officers? I feel terribly sorry for them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Questions arise about this narrative because the distance between Vietnam and Chernihiv is more than 7,800 km.<\/p>\n
When exploring an abandoned bunker, Sus told Dima about his previous occupation during the Soviet Union.
\n\u201cI worked in Kiev, I made gas masks,\u201d Sus said. \u201cThey were called product No. 2. Do you know what product No. 1 was?\u201d
\n\u201cWhat?\u201d asked Dima.
\n\u201cThink. Think about it.\u201d
\n\u201cCondoms?\u201d
\n\u201cYes. In the Soviet Union, condoms were called product No. 1.\u201d<\/p>\n
During a trip to the Zakopane mountain range in Europe, Sus heard about a recent lightning strike that killed two hikers.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is interesting,\u201d Sus told his team. \u201cMaybe if I get struck then I might get smarter.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sus and his team woke up early to attempt a climb to the peak on the ridge. Sus worried that it would be a difficult trek because he said he ate \u201c1.5 kgs of sausage for breakfast and my stomach is making its own gravitational field.\u201d<\/p>\n
When they reached a lake, Sus pointed up and yelled, \u201cWe\u2019re going up to that peak behind the clouds. Let\u2019s see if we survive.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI was born among rocks like these,\u201d Sus said. \u201cI’m a gnome and mined crystals when I was young.\u201d<\/p>\n
Halfway to the summit, Dima asked, \u201cSus, where is your selfie stick?\u201c
\n\u201cYou are my selfie stick,\u201d Sus replied, \u201cthe best in the world.\u201c<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had wanted to explore the mountains for ages,\u201d Sus exclaimed upon reaching the peak, \u201cand we managed it.\u201d He then told his viewers to \u201cset goals and move forward, you can do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
