SJCC<\/span> is one of the four colleges<\/span> <\/span>and five adult education schools that participate<\/span> in the SBCAE (south bay consortium adult education). <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>SJCC has established a MOU (memorandum of understanding) which acts as a bridge between<\/span> the<\/span> <\/span>SJCC<\/span> ESL curriculum and <\/span>the ESL curriculum offered at the Adult Education centers who participate in the SBCAE<\/span>\u201d<\/span> said ESL instructor Novella Simonson. <\/span><\/p>\n

Enrollment in <\/span>the <\/span>SJCC free no credit ESL program is being offered to everyone who first qualifies for the program through the SBCA<\/span>E or any other qualified source, s<\/span>uch as private schools<\/span> such as the Campbell Adult and Community Education Center.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>A separate application is administered by SJCC for free no credit students but the standard placement test for<\/span> all<\/span> ESL students is <\/span>still used to asses the students current level of competency<\/span>\u201d<\/span> said Monique <\/span>Rodarte<\/span> of the<\/span> Language Arts D<\/span>epartment.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are three free no credit career technical education (CTE) classes being offered at SJCC; ESL in health care, ESL for computers and computing, and ESL for the workplace. There are five free no credit courses being offered to ESL students<\/span> to bridge the gap between ESL students and mainstream English students. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The five standard free no credit ESL courses offered are ESL 531 Listening and Speaking, ESL 532 Reading and Writing, ESL 323 Reading and Vocabulary Development, <\/span>ESL 322 Paragraph Development and ESL 542 Intermediate Level Grammar.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The free no credit ES<\/span>L program benefits the resident status<\/span> students in <\/span>three<\/span> ways;<\/span> <\/span>in most cases it eliminates the <\/span>1<\/span> year resident requiremen<\/span>t,<\/span> it allows<\/span> the student<\/span>s<\/span> to enroll at the normal tuition rate<\/span>,<\/span> and<\/span> it<\/span> <\/span>allows immigrant students to apply for other college programs <\/span>available such as financial aid,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> said Simonson.<\/span><\/p>\n
