Prepare for life after college on campus<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is a leader inside each of
\nus and there is no better place to
\nnurture our leadership skills than
\nin college. It\u2019s the only place we
\ncan safely challenge ourselves and
\ntest the leader within us.
\nCollege is fertile ground for personal
\ndevelopment. When we as
\nstudents engage in critical thinking,
\nproblem-solving and decision
\nmaking, we are applying what we
\nhave learned in our classrooms to
\nthe real world.
\nWhy improve campus life?<\/strong>
\nWhile riding the bus home one
\nday, a student told me she was getting
\nready to transfer to San Jose
\nState University. When I mentioned
\nthat the college provides
\neco passes to their students, I can
\nremember the relief on her face at
\nthe idea that soon she would not
\nhave to spend $70 a month to ride
\nVTA.
\nThis is the first semester San
\nJose City College has offered eco
\npasses but it would not have been
\npossible without the many students
\nwho took on the effort years
\nago; students who have long graduated.
\nMaking the next step obtainable<\/strong>
\nAt another California community
\ncollege a professor kicked a
\nhomeless student out of class, citing
\nthe student\u2019s hygiene as a distraction
\nto the other students. It\u2019s
\nsafe to assume that this is not the
\nonly student who has come across
\nthis problem and it does not seem
\nfair that students who are trying to
\nget an education to better their situation
\nbecome unable to because
\nof their situation.
\nThe incident prompted students
\nto draft a resolution that would
\nenable students\u2019 access to locker
\nroom showers. They advocated
\nCalifornia state legislatures who
\nvoted in favor of the resolution,
\nand Gov. Jerry Brown recently
\nsigned it into law.
\nMaking meaningful change<\/strong>
\nIn the beginning of the semester,
\nI was enrolled in a PE class
\non Saturdays. On my first day in
\nthe middle of class, I started my
\nmonthly cycle and needed a feminine
\nproduct but there was nothing
\nin the dispensers and even if there
\nwas I had no change. I tried explaining
\nthis as briefly as possible
\nto my male PE teacher who I\u2019m
\nsure assumed I was just trying to
\nget out of doing the workout. I had
\nto choose; either workout for two
\nmore hours, let everyone in class
\nand on the bus ride home experience
\nmy monthly cycle with me or
\nget on the bus now and go home. I
\nwent home and dropped the class.
\nIt\u2019s safe to assume I\u2019m not the
\nonly one who has experienced
\nsomething like this because just
\nthree weeks ago, when community
\ncollege students throughout
\nthe state gathered in Sacramento
\nto vote on resolutions concerning
\nCalifornia Community Colleges,
\nthe last resolution they passed
\nwould recommend that feminine
\nhygiene products be made available
\nto all women on campus free
\nof charge.
\nThis is the power we have.<\/strong>
\nHere we get a chance to use our
\ntime on campus wisely and exercise
\nthe leader within, to grow and
\ndevelop through participation on
\ncampus and make a difference in
\nthe lives of students who come after
