Tattooing for love\u00a0<\/strong>and art<\/strong><\/p>\n

Every day on campus, students
\nsport elaborate tattoos, how do
\nthey feel about it?
\nThe survey found the average
\nstudent got his\/her tattoo as a tribute
\nto a loved one or for the beauty
\nof the art itself
\nOut of eight people surveyed,
\nfive were men and three were
\nwomen:
\n\u201cIt reminds me of who I am and
\nwho I lost in the years and who I
\nlove. My body is a canvas and I
\nlove to express with it.\u201d
\nOne person had a half-bodied
\nJapanese tattoo art style known as
\n\u201cIrezumi,\u201d which roughly transliterates
\n\u201cpricking the skin with blue
\nor green ink.\u201d Pop-culture calls it
\na \u201cbody suit.\u201d
\n\u201cI love the surprise of taking a
\ntwo-dimensional art and placing it
\non a three-dimensional form.\u201d
\nRunner up reasons to get a tattoo
\nwere: loving the tattoo culture,
\nenjoying freedom of expression,
\novercoming a difficult experience,
\nspreading a specific message \u2013
\nfrom poetry to religion
\n\u2013 and enjoying the shared experience
\nwhen a viewer actually
\ngets the message. Some messages
\nwere as elaborate as Virginia
\nWolfe quotes to smaller Tibetan
\nsymbols.
\nNaturally, for every positive
\nexperience, there are negative
\nside effects. Reasons to remove
\na tattoo were small, but significant
\nwarnings: bad tattoos, heartbreak
\nand one even affected comfort-
\nlevel in an otherwise happy
\ncareer experience.
\nThe worst parts of removing a
\ntattoo were also significant and
\nshould be considered before getting
\none put on. Removal was a
\n\u201cpainful, long process\u201d that \u201cinvolved
\nburning the skin with a
\ncold laser until it blistered\u201d and
\n\u201cthe higher your tolerance for pain
\nis, the better the removal is.\u201d Do
\nit with a cold laser and \u201cresearch
\nwhere you have it done and follow
\nthe directions you\u2019re given,
\nfor best results.\u201d
\nThe two people who removed
\ntheir tattoos had to receive an average
\nof five treatments. One set of
\ntreatments happened a long time
\nago and only cost $200. The newer
\nremoval cost $800 per treatment. In
\nboth cases, no insurance picked up
