Lilia Huang, an accounting student
\nasked, \u201cIn the Silicon Valley
\nwe tend to think of failures as
\nlessons. What kinds of lessons
\ndo you think are important?\u201d
\nThuc Vu: That would take
\nmore than an hour; there were
\nmany failures in Kotango that
\nmade Ohmni Labs better. As
\ninternational students sometimes
\nwe are less risk-taking, we take
\nthe safe approach. But in the Silicon
\nValley, making a mistake is
\nthe most beautiful thing you can
\ndo. It is a very interesting mindset
\nthat we don\u2019t find in Asia.
\nJust try everything. It is ok to fail.
\nCarol Diaz, 23, an industrial
\ndesign student asked, \u201cAs
\nan international student with
\nthe language barrier it is very
\nhard. How did you not give
\nup?\u201d and \u201cDo you think that
\nan IVY League school on your
\nresume is very important?\u201d
\nThuc Vu: Regarding barriers:
\nThe key is to find joy in whatever
\nyou do. If you are passionate
\nabout Industrial Design, are you
\nwilling to do it for free? (Student
\nnods) If you are willing to do it
\nfor free, then nothing can stop
\nyou. Try www.upwork.com –
\nthey allow you to do industrial
\ndesign as a freelancer. Just try it.
\nWhile you are doing something
\nyou love, you are having fun
\nand you might make some money.
\nSo, continue to look on the
\nbright side and stay motivated.
\nThuc Vu: Regarding IVY
\nLeague schools: It is a very interesting
\nquestion. There has been
\na huge movement in the Silicon
\nValley to move away from education.
\nIn big companies, like
\nGoogle, they block out your
\neducation credentials, so you
\ncan\u2019t be viewed by it. I actually
\nbelieve in that. As long as you
\nget a good education, as long as
\nyou have good, practical experience
\nand apply your skill, then it
\ndoesn\u2019t matter what school you
\ncame from. I think the trend right
\nnow is to focus on the experience
\nand rather than the credentials.
