Imagine walking onto a college
\ncampus and being arrested:
\nYou\u2019ve committed no crime,
\nyour grades are good and you
\nhave goals and ambitions that
\ncontribute to the well-being of
\nthe United States.
\nThis is the scenario Deferred
\nAction for Childhood Arrivals
\n(DACA) students may face when
\nDonald Trump takes office as
\nPresident of the United States of
\nAmerica.
\nDACA students register in order
\nto legally remain and work in the
\nU.S. despite their status, but such
\na registry would be convenient
\nfor anyone wishing to mass deport
\nundocumented immigrants;
\nsomething Trump promised to do
\nin his 2016 campaign, something
\nthat appealed to about half of the
\nvoting population.
\nStudents may regret adding
\ntheir names to the list, as they
\ncould easily be targeted by the
\nUnited States Citizenship and
\nImmigration Services (USCIS) if
\nDACA goes away under our next
\npresident.
\nSome students may wish to register
\nfor DACA before fees go up
\nDec. 23 of this year but students
\neligible for DACA should delay
\nto register until Trump\u2019s immigration
\npolicy is in effect and fully
\nunderstood.
\nJudging from the tone of the
\n2016 election\u2014promises of mass
\ndeportation, support for president-
\nelect Trump from groups
\nlike the KKK\u2014DACA students
\nshould be cautious.
\nHistorically, when one group is
\ntargeted by a regime it does not
\nend well. Adolf Hitler blamed
\nJewish people for the country\u2019s
\nproblems, which led to the death
\nof 6 million Jews during the Holocaust.
\nTrump supporter, Carl Higbie
\nsuggests creating a registry for
\nMuslim people living in the U.S.
\nand cites Japanese internment
\ncamps as precedent for national
\nsecurity measures. The DACA
\nregistry is already there. If Muslims
\nare to be targeted, undocumented
\nimmigrants should not
\nfeel any safer.
\nUC Berkeley offers legal support
\nto DACA students and their
\nfamilies, warning students that
\nthe Trump administration will
\nhave their personal information
\non file and urges them to be \u201cfully
\naware of the risks.\u201d
\nIt makes sense to heed the
\nwarning from such an institution
\nwhen \u201ceconomic nationalist\u201d Steven
\nBannon is chief strategist to
\nTrump and videos of white supremacists
\ncelebrating his victory
\nare circulating the internet. Images
\nof the Nazi salute and audio
\nof, \u201cHail Trump! Hail our [white]
\npeople! Hail our victory!\u201d brings
\nto mind dark days before the Civil
\nRights Movement when \u2018strange
\nfruit\u2019 hung from trees.
\nWe do not yet know the scope
\nof future immigration policy,
\nbut the writing is on the wall for
\nthose who can read it. On c e
\na student is in the DACA registry,
\ntheir entire family could become
\ntargets of mass deportation
\nenforcement, similarly, students
\nwho reveal their undocumented
\nstatus on social media, at a public
\nevent, or even privately could be
\nsubject to investigation and deportation
\nif DACA goes away.
\nLara Ibarra, a 2016 valedictorian,
\nrevealed her status on Twitter
\nand strangers reported her to
\nUSCIS. Without the protection of
\nDACA, Ibarra could have been
\nsubject to arrest and deportation.
\nUncertainty about the future of
\nimmigration legislation means
\nstudents should delay DACA applications.
\nCampaign promises
\nto crack down on immigration,
\nwhite supremacists that support
\nDonald Trump, and historical
\npatterns of what happens when
\none group of people is targeted by
\nthe government imply a dark time
\nahead for undocumented students
\nwho have made their lives here
\nand have committed to working
\nand contributing to the American
\neconomy and culture.<\/p>\n
