Dear Jaguar community,<\/strong><\/p>\n

As reactions to the Presidential
\nelection continue to ripple across
\nthe nation and emotions simmer
\nthroughout our communities; we
\nare undoubtedly confronted with
\nour own reactions and certainly
\nwith the reactions of our students.
\nThe truth is, for many in our
\ncommunity, these results don\u2019t feel
\nreal and they are indistinguishable
\nfrom feelings of fresh, close grief.
\nRegardless of anyone\u2019s politics,
\nit is somewhat surprising, and
\nextremely disappointing to many,
\nincluding myself, that in our time,
\na candidate can win the Presidency
\nof the United States of America
\nafter a long campaign of slinging
\nthreats and insults at historically
\ndisenfranchised people who have
\nworked hard to contribute to the
\nbeauty of this nation.
\nThe results of Tuesday\u2019s
\npresidential election is a stark
\nreminder that the country is in fact
\ndivided between those who want
\nto make our \u201cnation great again\u201d
\n(alone) and those who want to \u201cmake
\nit great\u201d (together). The fact is, the
\npresident-elect, Mr. Donald Trump,
\nhas made statements threatening to
\nban Muslims from the United States,
\nrefuse refugees, deport millions of
\nundocumented workers\/students
\nand build a wall on the border
\nwith Mexico. Moreover, he has
\ndisparaged, Mexican Americans,
\nAfrican Americans, women and
\npeople with disabilities. Obviously,
\nthese are all people that make up
\nthe critical mass of our student
\nbody and college staff. Our values
\nof inclusion, diversity, and equity
\nwill continue to drive how we serve
\nALL individuals at San Jose City
\nCollege.
\nAs the significance of these
\nelection results continue to unfold,
\nI want to encourage us, as a College
\ncommunity, to be responsive to
\nour students, and to one another.
\nMany are experiencing feelings
\nof uncertainty and expressing a
\ngood deal of anxiety and fear as
\nwe all move into an unknown and
\nseemingly volatile future. I want
\nto reaffirm that our College and
\nDistrict will continue to uphold
\nthe values of democracy,
\nfreedom, social justice,
\nand respect for the law and
\nthe dignity of all people,
\nindependent of national
\norigin, skin color, religion,
\ngender, sexual orientation or
\npolitical views.
\nTo that end, I want to
\ninvite everyone to be open to
\ndialogue and to responding
\nto student reactions by
\nbeing ready and willing to
\nlisten and by being prepared
\nto make referrals to the
\nappropriate resources when
\nnecessary.
\nOn Tuesday, November
\n15th from 12 noon \u2013 2 pm
\nwe will be hosting a campus
\nforum featuring college staff
\nand student leadership in the
\ntheatre. This will provide
\nus with the opportunity to
\nshare and process these events as a
\ncommunity.
\nPlease feel free to attend and
\nto recommend that your students
\nparticipate. Additional information
\nand fliers will be disseminated over
\nthe next several days leading up to
\nthe event.
\nI want to thank the Student Affairs
\nteam for their swift action in setting
\nup this opportunity to engage with
\none another. I also want to thank all
\nof you for your on-going care and
\nresponsiveness to the concerns of
\nour students.
\nThere is a lot of work to do;
\nhowever, I am optimistic that we
\nhave a strong community, and
\ncountry, and are well positioned to
\nsupport, encourage, uplift and love
\none another, and our students, as
\nwe move forward together from a
\nposition of strength and unity for a
\nmore hopeful tomorrow.
\nStudent success will continue to
\nbe our number one priority… Go
