{"id":11230,"date":"2016-11-22T12:01:34","date_gmt":"2016-11-22T20:01:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/?p=11230"},"modified":"2016-11-22T12:01:34","modified_gmt":"2016-11-22T20:01:34","slug":"international-students-jaguars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/es\/11230\/campus-life\/international-students-jaguars\/","title":{"rendered":"International students are Jaguars too"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Calling everyone to engage<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>with the global community<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>City College draws students<br \/>\nfrom all across the globe and this<br \/>\nsemester SJCC is home to the<br \/>\nlargest population of international<br \/>\nstudents in its history.<br \/>\nInternational students are<br \/>\nrequired to take a minimum of 12<br \/>\nunits per semester and pay more<br \/>\nthan five times per unit than the<br \/>\naverage student, according to<br \/>\nadmissions and records.<br \/>\nThis is the price international<br \/>\nstudents pay for the opportunity<br \/>\nto study, work hard, take part<br \/>\nin college life, network and<br \/>\nultimately gain the skills and<br \/>\nexperience needed to find a job<br \/>\nin California; they arrive eager to<br \/>\nlearn and communicate.<br \/>\n\u201cThe thing is we\u2019re kind of shy,\u201d<br \/>\nsaid Karol Coellar, a 23-yearold<br \/>\nindustrial design major, who<br \/>\narrived four months ago from<br \/>\nEl Salvador. \u201cI can be scared to<br \/>\ncommunicate with people, but I<br \/>\nstill try.\u201d<br \/>\nSJCC students also benefit from<br \/>\ncultivating relationships with<br \/>\ninternational students.<br \/>\n\u201cIt is important for us to<br \/>\ncreate meaningful interpersonal<br \/>\nrelationships with our<br \/>\ninternational students in order to<br \/>\nlearn about the world outside of<br \/>\nthe Bay Area, acquire new skills,<br \/>\nand also to learn about diverse<br \/>\nperspectives,\u201d communication<br \/>\nprofessor Shelley Giacalone said.<br \/>\nThe entire experience should be<br \/>\na win-win for everyone, however<br \/>\nnot all international students are<br \/>\nfinding it easy to establish these<br \/>\nrelationships.<br \/>\n\u201cI was thinking that people<br \/>\nwould be friendly, but they are<br \/>\nnot friendly, especially here in<br \/>\nCalifornia,\u201d said Sevar Okulmus,<br \/>\na 26-year-old international student<br \/>\nfrom Turkey who has been here<br \/>\ntwo years.<br \/>\nKemei Dong, a 19-year-old<br \/>\naccounting major from China, has<br \/>\nbeen here one year. Last year Dong<br \/>\nsaid she was aware others around<br \/>\nher were planning for Halloween<br \/>\nand Thanksgiving, but she did<br \/>\nnot get a chance to celebrate with<br \/>\nanyone and she said it looks as if<br \/>\nthis may happen again.<br \/>\n\u201cFor these two festivals I didn\u2019t<br \/>\nsee my friends, I didn\u2019t know<br \/>\nwhere I should go,\u201d Dong said.<br \/>\nCoellar has a suggestion on<br \/>\nhow SJCC students can help<br \/>\nmake international students feel<br \/>\nmore at home.<br \/>\n\u201cBe nicer, a lot of international<br \/>\nstudents are here without family,<br \/>\nwithout friends and it\u2019s really<br \/>\nhard.\u201d Coellar said. \u201cSometimes<br \/>\npeople are so into their stuff that<br \/>\nthey don\u2019t see the people around.\u201d<br \/>\nThere is no one-size-fits all<br \/>\nsolution, but there is something<br \/>\nall students can do to effectively<br \/>\nmake a positive difference.<br \/>\n\u201cEngage them!\u201d said Sam Ho,<br \/>\nthe director of employment and<br \/>\ndiversity with the SJECC District<br \/>\nand a former international<br \/>\nstudent from Vietnam. \u201cWe need<br \/>\nto make them feel like home,<br \/>\nthey are our guests.\u201d<br \/>\nTo engage with international<br \/>\nstudents on campus Giacalone<br \/>\nrecommends students participate<br \/>\nin International Education Week.<br \/>\nAn entire week of events designed<br \/>\nto get SJCC students acclimated<br \/>\nwith the international students<br \/>\nprogram. This week long campus<br \/>\nevent begins Nov. 14 and ends<br \/>\nNov. 17.<br \/>\n\u201cI think American students and<br \/>\ninternational students both want<br \/>\nto know each other, but don\u2019t find<br \/>\nmany chances to,\u201d Dong said. \u201cA<br \/>\ncollege activity is always a chance<br \/>\nto bring students together.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Calling everyone to engage with the global community City College draws students from all across the globe and this semester SJCC is home to the largest population of international students in its history.
