{"id":11222,"date":"2016-11-22T11:55:13","date_gmt":"2016-11-22T19:55:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/?p=11222"},"modified":"2016-11-22T12:32:24","modified_gmt":"2016-11-22T20:32:24","slug":"president-jaguars-speaks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/es\/11222\/showcase\/president-jaguars-speaks\/","title":{"rendered":"President of the Jaguars speaks out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-11244\" src=\"http:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ASGpres1-BW-475x267.jpg\" alt=\"asgpres1-bw\" width=\"475\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ASGpres1-BW-475x267.jpg 475w, https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ASGpres1-BW-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ASGpres1-BW-900x506.jpg 900w, https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ASGpres1-BW-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The election is over and even though some students<br \/>\nare disappointed that the country decided against<br \/>\nelecting a woman president they can find comfort in<br \/>\nthe fact that San Jose City College did.<br \/>\n\u201cI voted for Luna because she understands what<br \/>\nis important,\u201d said Andrew Phelps, president of the<br \/>\nMental Health Client Association, a SJCC student<br \/>\norganization.<br \/>\nIn May, City College students elected Iriana Luna, a<br \/>\n20-year-old pre-med Latina, ASG president.<br \/>\n\u201cShe is completely invested and she is willing to<br \/>\nsacrifice her time for students,\u201d Director of Student<br \/>\nActivities David Sanchez said.<br \/>\nAs president, Luna encourages student involvement.<br \/>\n\u201cIf students don\u2019t see a club that they like they can<br \/>\ncreate one and we\u2019re always open to new clubs,\u201d Luna<br \/>\nsaid. \u201cThe clubs that are functioning are doing great<br \/>\nthings; SACNAS just won two national awards.\u201d<br \/>\nAs the eldest of her three siblings Luna is no stranger<br \/>\nto leadership. She starts her day at 3 a.m. on days she<br \/>\nworks and sleeps in until 5 a.m. on her days off.<br \/>\n\u201cSeeing how much my parents had to work, how<br \/>\nmuch they had to struggle, I can\u2019t complain,\u201d Luna<br \/>\nsaid.<br \/>\nLuna said her parents inspire her to work hard to<br \/>\npursue her childhood dream, a career in medicine.<br \/>\n\u201cEver since I was little, I wanted to be a doctor,\u201d<br \/>\nLuna said. \u201cYou don\u2019t really see a lot of Latino faces<br \/>\nwhen you go to the doctor.\u201d<br \/>\nApart from being president this semester Luna is<br \/>\ntaking physics, calculus and women\u2019s literature and<br \/>\nafter graduation Luna said she hopes to transfer into a<br \/>\nfour year institution.<br \/>\n\u201cI really want to study at UC Santa Cruz because<br \/>\nthey\u2019re one of the few campuses with community<br \/>\nstudies, which is what I want to study,\u201d Luna said.<br \/>\n\u201cI hope to begin working and volunteering more at<br \/>\nhospitals and community-based organizations.\u201d<br \/>\nWhen she\u2019s not at school or work, Luna said<br \/>\nspending time with her family is important.<br \/>\n\u201cI think it\u2019s crucial to do (spend time with family)<br \/>\nbecause they give me a lot of support,\u201d said Luna.<br \/>\n\u201cPlus it\u2019s great to hear what my siblings are doing, and<br \/>\nit\u2019s a refreshing time to relax.\u201d<br \/>\nLuna also likes to spend her free time outdoors,<br \/>\nreading and appreciating art.<br \/>\n\u201cIt helps keep me connected to beauty in the world<br \/>\naround us that we often times pass on,\u201d Luna said. \u201cI<br \/>\nenjoy reading memoirs because they help me grow in<br \/>\nhow I view the world. Paintings and drawings let me<br \/>\nimmerse myself into the vision of the artist.\u201d<br \/>\nFor young women aspiring to become leaders,<br \/>\nLuna has some words of wisdom.<br \/>\n\u201cI always remember what my parents told me<br \/>\ngrowing up. \u2018If something was easy then everyone<br \/>\nwould do it,\u2019\u201d Luna said. \u201cAs a leader sometimes<br \/>\nyou have to make difficult calls or have to be in<br \/>\nuncomfortable situations; however, there are very<br \/>\nfew people who put themselves in leadership roles so<br \/>\ndon\u2019t give up!\u201d<br \/>\nLuna encourages ladies to not be afraid to speak out<br \/>\nwhen decisions are being made.<br \/>\n\u201cTo be a leader, you must have the courage to do<br \/>\nwhat you believe is right,\u201d Luna said. \u201cDecision<br \/>\nmaking is something that as women we may feel<br \/>\nuncomfortable doing because of the societal norms;<br \/>\nhowever, we must break from this model and voice<br \/>\nour opinions.
