\u201cI could never make any money so I turned to photography and strangely enough photography worked.\u201d McGowan said. \u201cPhotography worked as the music didn\u2019t so I pursued the photography and ended up having all the major Hollywood recording studios as my client list.\u201d<\/p>\n
McGowan established his own successful business, shooting for famous recording studios in Hollywood.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a small but it was successful,\u201d McGowan said. \u201cI didn\u2019t like it, so I came back up to the bay area where I much preferred the pace of life.\u201d<\/p>\n
One day he noticed an ad for a part time teaching position at San Francisco City College and said that he thought he\u2019d like to try that.<\/p>\n
After a semester he was hooked.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just loved teaching, so I got more part time work in different colleges,\u201d McGowan said.<\/p>\n
In 1998 he was offered a job at San Jose City College.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe funny thing was that I was offered a job at San Jose City and I was also the opening act for Bob Dylan and Van Morrison,\u201d McGowan said.<\/p>\n
At age 42 McGowan had to decide between giving it another go with music or taking a steady job with benefits.<\/p>\n
\u201cI picked the steady job with benefits,\u201d McGowan said, \u201cso now I proudly work for San Jose City College and just occasionally play concerts.\u201d<\/p>\n
McGowan performed at the Theater on San Pedro Square Tuesday, Oct. 11.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was amazing, honestly it was better than I expected to be honest,\u201d Christian Bravo a 23-year-old\u00a0 SJCC student said.<\/p>\n
Out of McGowan\u2019s experiences emerges an important life lesson.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019ve got to give any artistic endeavor your most enthusiastic years but it the forces aren\u2019t with you, which often times they are not, don\u2019t rely on it. Get a degree.\u201d McGowan said. \u201cIf you start ending up in your late 30s as I did, without any money, it\u2019s time to get off that horse and ride a different one.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
