City College held its fifth annual peace pole dedication ceremony Wednesday, Sept. 21, in the arts quad near the tall white inscribed peace poles.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese peace poles represent all the people who in our tradition, have gone on before us, fought before us,\u201d NAACP San Jose Chapter President Rev. Jethroe Moore II said.<\/p>\n
Moore was one three guest speakers at the event.<\/p>\n
The Director of Development at the Asian-Americans for Community Involvement (AACI), Cam Vu works with over 12,000 predominantly low-income Asian immigrants and refugee individuals every year.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter 43 years of serving the community,\u201d Vu said, \u201cwhat is important is that we respect the diversity of those who live here in our county.\u201d<\/p>\n
Philip Pflager, a member of Veterans for Peace San Jose chapter, spoke on behalf of the organization that opposes war.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe seek justice for veterans and victims of war,\u201d Pflager said. \u201cWe seek to end the arms race and eliminate nuclear power, to increase public awareness of the costs of war, abolish war as an instrument of national policy.\u201d<\/p>\n
The U.N. General Assembly has declared Sept. 21 as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll of us have troubles, all of us have issues, we see troubled times,\u201d Moore said, \u201cbut every human being wants the same thing in life, peace.\u201d<\/p>\n
