Night has fallen. The goblins, ghouls and demon clowns stir within the thick fog. The park lit up with Halloween decorations. Past the entrance, huge flaming pumpkins surround the pool in front of Great America\u2019s famous two level carousels.<\/p>\n
Further inside, next to the old Vortex an extreme fire show choreographed to music by a live band.<\/p>\n
Most of the normal rides are operating alongside the mazes, which have taken the place of little shops throughout the park.<\/p>\n
The feature attraction VR 5150 was unlike anything I had ever experienced.<\/p>\n
Only about 6-8 are allowed to enter into this virtual reality attraction at a time. Once inside, each person is put in his or her own room divided by hospital curtains and a member of their medical team help put on the virtual reality goggles and headphones. Next they literally strap you to a chair.<\/p>\n
Looking around the room with the virtual reality goggles on was extraordinary\u2014a total VR experience.<\/p>\n
To get things started, the nurse comes up to administer a shot and it\u2019s very convincing.<\/p>\n
The plot of the story is a mental patient with supernatural abilities (similar to that of Jean Gray as the Phoenix from X-Men) wreaks havoc throughout the mental ward.<\/p>\n
She tortures the staff among the piles of dead bodies and there are few moments that might make your heart jump but it was nothing too scary.<\/p>\n
Great America\u2019s Haunt is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only until Oct. 31 from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, the park decided to shut down this VR experience days after it opened.<\/p>\n
