Come to the world where only Pok\u00e9mon Go players dare to tread.<\/span><\/p>\n

Have you heard about the Pok\u00e9mon global phenomenon? If not, be prepared to be amazed at the hidden virtual world found right here on your very own college campus. <\/span><\/p>\n

This summer a mapping system company took the Pok\u00e9mon to the next level \u2013 as an argumentive, virtual world found between the layers of cyberspace and your personal cell phone.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s right, there are hundreds upon hundreds of characters you can meet walking on the paths of these hallowed grounds. <\/span><\/p>\n

There are three major hotspots, called \u201cgyms,\u201d where you can find characters and battle them in an attempt to capture them. \u00a0\u201cAlmost every church and hospital has a gym,\u201d as well as, \u201cart installations, such as the \u2018Peace and Love\u2019 poles,\u201d communication instructor Christopher Lancaster, said. \u00a0The campus gyms are located at the greenhouse, and \u201cPeace & Love\u201d poles near the Technology Center and between the Cosmetology and Fitness Center.<\/span><\/p>\n

How did this all get started? \u00a0According to The Pok\u00e9mon 20th Anniversary web page www.pokemon20.com, started, on February 27, 1996, as Gameboy games: Pok\u00e9mon Red and Pok\u00e9mon Green. Eventually, it blossomed into a Japanese Anime movie (November 1999) and has taken the world by storm for over 20 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLike Transformers, it was an effort to tie a television story to a game and later a toy,\u201d Lancaster said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The latest incarnation, \u201cPok\u00e9mon Go\u201d (Released July 7) is an international game created by the Niantic Corporation on their Ingress GPS Platform<\/span><\/p>\n

Student Melissa Martinez showed SJCC Times her iPhone version. \u00a0Visually, the computer app is a fascinating cross between two other apps: Google Earth (GE) and Google Sky (GS). Google Earth shows you the 3D map view of the planet. Google Sky shows you every constellation and star in front of you \u2013 even through the ground at your feet. \u00a0In the regular mode (GE), you see the next Pok\u00e9mon location. \u00a0However, if you have an iPhone, the virtual reality mode (GS) shows characters as if they are right in front of you. With the next Buddy system update, Pok\u00e9mon\u2019s will go walking with you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Local student gurus Carlos Lopez (120 captures) and Nelson Aleman (111 captures) were kind enough to explain the premise of the game, nearby hot parks and give their feedback on the game.<\/span><\/p>\n

Essentially, you capture every Pok\u00e9mon in your realm, your region, and the world \u2013 one man gave up his job and went hunting globally just for bragging rights. \u00a0There are three (3) main gym teams: Red-Valor equals low combat points (cp) 200-300, Blue-Mystic equals medium cp 300-600, and Yellow-Instinct equals high cp 600+. \u00a0Neutral gyms devoid of characters are gray. \u00a0Each character appears for ten (10) minutes and you can fight them, win and place them in your pouch. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pok\u00e9mon stands for pocket monsters. If you need more time to attract, spawn and capture them, then there are several options that provide an extra 30 minutes: incense, lures, and lucky eggs. \u00a0Incense creates an attractive aura around you. Lures attract rare Pok\u00e9mon. Lucky eggs double catching time, evolving your characters and activate Pok\u00e9 Stops.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why would you want to enter a Stop? \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because, it is exhausting to fight all the time. A stop replenishes your energy levels, provides healing potions and revises your game.<\/span><\/p>\n

Obviously, there are two different ways to increase your chances. \u00a0You can work with a team and earn them with free sweat, or you can purchase coins. The best purchasing strategy is to obtain incubators, hatch 9 eggs for 150 coins each and which then help you attract more Pok\u00e9mon. Or just throw berries at Pikachu and he\u2019ll help you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gift cards can be purchased in the Campus Bookstore.<\/span><\/p>\n

The hottest park to visit is the Guadalupe River Park near the SAP Center. \u00a0It has 10 gyms and on any given has about 200 people looking for Pok\u00e9mon \u2013 with increases on the weekends. <\/span><\/p>\n

Lopez said, that Pok\u00e9mon Go was \u201cmore fun because you meet more people\u201d playing the game. \u00a0There are also tremendous health benefits. \u00a0Region-specific Pok\u00e9mon requires you to walk several kilometers (2K, 5K, and 10K) never going more than 15 mph. <\/span><\/p>\n

However, Nelson pointed out that the card game is \u201ca lot more fun\u201d and you don\u2019t waste \u201c30 percent of your battery life.\u201d \u00a0The cards allow you \u201cmore strategy, card trading, and one-on-one interaction\u201d \u2013 Right here on campus. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you are interested, both students can teach in the Cyber Caf\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n
