{"id":11043,"date":"2016-09-01T13:13:50","date_gmt":"2016-09-01T20:13:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/?p=11043"},"modified":"2016-09-20T12:31:30","modified_gmt":"2016-09-20T19:31:30","slug":"mixed-martial-arts-club-offers-chance-to-learn-self-defense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/es\/11043\/campus-life\/mixed-martial-arts-club-offers-chance-to-learn-self-defense\/","title":{"rendered":"Mixed Martial Arts Club offers chance to learn self-defense"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Mixed Martial Arts Club at San Jose City College envisions being a permanent club on campus with the bigger hope of spreading to other colleges across the country. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The creation of the club was spearheaded by general studies student Volark Keo, 37, to offer students the chance to work with enthusiasts and practitioners to, \u201ccome as you are,\u201d and share knowledge and learn offense and defense Keo says that the club open to any one of any skill level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThe <\/span><span class=\"s1\">only requirement is that you practice this art in a peaceful manner and respect every one and other\u2019s arts,\u201d said Keo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Even though the instructor Don Madrasi specializes in northern praying mantis style of boxing, each member has his or her own unique style and philosophy on fighting.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Madrasi says that the legend behind the name of his style of fighting was, \u201ca battle of life and death between a praying mantis and a cicada,\u201d because the cicada had superior size but the praying mantis had superior moves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Members of the SJCC club often engage in conversations about their personal styles and overall vision for the club. Keo, for instance, said he believes in the Bruce Lee-inspired, \u201cart of fighting without fighting,\u201d and walking away unless cornered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Carlos Quinones, 20, fire technology major, specializes in kickboxing believes that \u201cthere is no such thing as a bad student, only a bad teacher,\u201d said Quinones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">AJ Canepa, 21, kinesiology major, specializes in Shotokan karate-do and believes that, \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s3\">there&#8217;s a time to fight and a time for peace, choose wisely,\u201d said Canepa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Mixed-martial arts are a complex hybridization of old and new styles of fighting, self-defense and combat such as Brazilian jiu-jitsu, folk wrestling and kickboxing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is impossible to reduce MMA to a single style of fighting, as it is constantly changing and developing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">MMA offers students a chance to learn old styles and developing new styles of fighting as well.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Kickboxing, for instance, has become increasingly popular since its inception in the 1970s and has contributed significantly to the emergence and popularity of mixed martial arts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The club has been over since spring but anyone interested in the club or learning more about the history and legends of northern praying mantis boxing can contact Madrasi at <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Madrasi2006@gmail.com<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> or 408-512-7132.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Mixed Martial Arts Club at San Jose City College envisions being a permanent club on campus with the bigger hope of spreading to other colleges across the country.
