{"id":11041,"date":"2016-09-01T13:05:45","date_gmt":"2016-09-01T20:05:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/?p=11041"},"modified":"2016-09-20T12:31:30","modified_gmt":"2016-09-20T19:31:30","slug":"finding-higher-education-in-the-latino-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sjcctimes.com\/es\/11041\/campus-life\/finding-higher-education-in-the-latino-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Finding higher education in the Latino community"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>\u201cWhen I started my very first English as a Second Language class at SJCC , I thought I would find a lot of Latino students in my class, but I was in for a big surprise when I realized I was the only Latino student,\u201d said Margot Uchicua.<\/p>\n<p>Uchicua, a current San Jose City College student, photographs students from Latin America whose English is their second language and who are pursuing a higher education.<\/p>\n<p>She is a Peruvian student who came to the United States in 2013, and is now majoring in graphic design aiming to transfer to Cal Poly.<\/p>\n<p>She was shocked to find out that \u201cthe Latino population; the big minority in this country, only few were attending college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Uchicua came up with the project idea where the aim is to encourage Latino students to keep going with their education by displaying other minority students in their situations<\/p>\n<p>Then, she adds script to the photographs and includes name, place of birth, major, and sometimes whether they are dreamers or not.<\/p>\n<p>The term \u201cdreamers\u201d refers to individuals in the U.S. who were brought to this country at an early age without any documentation but have assimilated to this country\u201fs culture and have been educated by the U.S. school systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the project is pretty cool because it\u201fs sort of going against the whole \u201eHispanics\/Latinos don&#8217;t go to college because they can\u201ft handle it\u201f stereotype,\u201d said Maria Briseno, who is majoring in Business Management and was part of Uchicua\u201fs project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c All the students who are part of my project are a great example of overcoming, and perseverance. some of them are first generation to attend college, and for all of them English is their second language,\u201d said Margot.<\/p>\n<p>She believes that the Latino community is playing an important role in different areas of this country; such as economic, social and political.
