Community\u00a0and social advancement are\u00a0promoted around campus through\u00a0student clubs, societies and\u00a0governments that are offered\u00a0outside the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Blake Balajadia, director\u00a0of student development and\u00a0activity said getting students\u00a0involved in student government,\u00a0organizations, conduct matters\u00a0and recruiting people to the\u00a0campus are all part of his job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudent organizations are the\u00a0heart and soul of the campus.\u00a0These people want to become\u00a0doctors, dentist and lawyers and\u00a0grow to do big things. Their\u00a0journey starts here and I want to\u00a0get more people involved to add\u00a0to the variety of what\u2019s out there\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>One thing Balajadia says he\u00a0would like to see expanded the\u00a0most are the cultural groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThere\u2019s a really diverse\u00a0student population on this\u00a0campus, and there are very few\u00a0organizations,\u201d he said, pointing\u00a0out the large population of\u00a0women, Vietnamese and Black\u00a0students with the fact there is no\u00a0black student union or other clubs to represent different cultural\u00a0groups on campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need a person to value\u00a0everything that\u2019s offered here,\u00a0not just to get in and get out,\u201d\u00a0Balajadia said. If anyone puts\u00a0in enough effort they will get\u00a0a degree, move on and be\u00a0successful, but at the end at\u00a0that job interview, when you\u2019re\u00a0talking the most impactful things\u00a0about your college experience\u00a0it\u2019s the people, the culture and\u00a0the leadership skills picked up\u00a0who you become outside the\u00a0classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudent clubs (organizations)\u00a0are like running a small business,\u00a0and something to use as an\u00a0advantage on the job hunt.\u201d\u00a0Balajadia said. \u201cIf you think\u00a0about it, an organization is like\u00a0a business. They both have a\u00a0purpose. You have to recruit\u00a0people, you have to keep track\u00a0of the money, you have to keep\u00a0track of what the organization\/\u00a0business is about to do, what after\u00a0that and where they been.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason Chittavong studies\u00a0law and is the president of the\u00a0Law Society club. He is soon to\u00a0graduate to a four year university.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe purpose of the Law\u00a0Society is to help students at\u00a0SJCC who are interested in\u00a0studying or being in the legal\u00a0field, and to prepare students for\u00a0a path to law school according\u00a0to Jason. SJCC is one of only 22\u00a0community colleges in California\u00a0to be associated with a Pathway\u00a0to Law. Course preparation as\u00a0well as priority enrollment in 6\u00a0law schools associated with the\u00a0program is a benefit to its club\u00a0members,\u201d Chittavong said.<\/p>\n<p>The club is constantly thinking\u00a0of ways to get involved with the\u00a0community.They will conduct\u00a0outreach to students that would\u00a0like to see change campus and\u00a0research if that change can be\u00a0applied to the campus.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Student organizations\u00a0bring life to SJCC BY JAMES HARTLEY TIMES STAFF SJCC offers more than class\u00a0and long lectures.
