KJCC (104.1 FM) broadcasters discuss topics on Tuesday, April 5 at San Jose City College radio room located in the Student Center.
San Jose City College radio station KJCC has been saved from the budgetary axe. KJCC, broadcasting on 104.1 FM, has been slated to be reinstated as a full-time class, said Virginia Scales, interim dean of Language Arts. The new classes, Journalism 042A, B and C, will be added to the fall schedule.

KJCC has been a part of SJCC since 1978, and has been operated by various campus clubs since fall 1994, when the classes were cancelled because of budget cuts, according to the station manual. The station, located in the Cyber Cafe, has been labeled Journalism Directed Studies 98. Bay Area sports broadcasting veteran John Shrader is the current instructor.

The class was renewed as a directed studies course, then nearly cancelled for the fall 2010 semester. Due to a change in the directed studies requirements, “(We) could no longer offer directed studies in place of a class,” Scales said.

An exception to the rule was made for the current and previous semesters. In fall 2010, the course wasn’t offered until a month after the semester began, but still drew 22 students, Scales said.

Operation and funding of the station is indirect.

“The (Media) Club operates the radio station,” said Tony La Rosa, 31, Media Club president and a political science major. “The Media Club is a support mechanism for the radio station, and that we would draw people from the class.”
