Lady Jags advance by placing third

Next Step: NorCal Championships

The San Jose City College women’s cross-country team placed third in the Coast Conference Championships on Thursday, Oct. 30 at Crystal Springs Park in Belmont, where the top three teams out of six advanced to race in the NorCal Championship on Saturday, Nov. 8.
Hartnell and De Anza College placed first and second, respectively.

What the Jags did on Oct. 30 exceeded Head Coach David Flynn’s expectations and he said he was “very pleased with what happened in that race. We have a very young group of women runners.”
All five women who started the race finished with point scoring finishes for a team total of 85.
First-place Hartnell College finished with 15 points and De Anza College collected 47 points.
“In the sport of cross-country the lowest score score wins, just like golf,” Flynn said.
The next step for the Lady Jag running squad is going up against all the best female cross-country runners in Northern California at the community college level.
Freshman runner Lillian Ruiz said she is “super excited” for her third time running the Crystal Springs course and second in a week and a half.
“The Crystal Springs course is really fun.” Ruiz said. “I understand how to balance my pace with my energy and I already know ahead of time there is a long stretch that is steep that I will be looking out for.”
Along with Ruiz, fellow newbie to the cross-country team Kanani Jeffery is looking at NorCals as a “good experience for my motivation.” Jeffery said who will be running in her second race this season in NorCals.
The top 10 out of 15 team in NorCals move on to the State Championship on Saturday, Nov. 22 in Fresno.
