SJCC is preparing for annual celebration of the International Education Week. San Jose City College will celebrate its third annual International Education Week with a new theme. The IEW, celebrated in November each year in the week before Thanksgiving, will be held the week of Nov. 17-20 this year. The International Education Week is celebrated in more than 100 countries worldwide. It was started in 2000 by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the U.S. Department of Education, according to the State Department website.

Every year there is a different theme for the celebration. The theme this year is “Wrap & Roll Around the World” with demos of how to make egg rolls and a rice ball making station, according to the tentative event schedule.
SJCC staff will demonstrate how to prepare a rice ball. International Movie/ Pizza night, Cultural dress Fashion Show/Dance and language survival sessions will be some of the fun informative activities among the event schedule.
International Student Ngan Le, from Vietnam, said she will participate in the fashion show event and will wear a Vietnamese traditional dress ao dai.
“I feel really good to be part of the International program, and I would like to invite other students to be part of us, if seeking an affordable education,” Le said. “I feel grateful to be here. You can have friends from all over the world.”
This celebration is part of the efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans to share and exchange students, cultures and languages worldwide, creating a bridge of partnership and friendship through education, according to the website of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
“I feel warm and welcome to be part of the International Program,” said Nina Pham, an SJCC international student from Vietnam. “The coordinator Doriann Tran is great. I like to attend most of the events where the international students get together.”
IEW also encourages individuals, institutions including schools, colleges, international organizations, businesses and associations interested in international education to be part of international programs.
“International education creates life-long friendships,” said John Kerry, U.S. Secretary of State, as quoted by the website in 2013. “The International Education Week is becoming a stronger celebration every year in SJCC,” said Doriann Tran, SJCC International Program counselor/coordinator.
Different departments have joined to collaborate in order to offer a successful week event, she said. In the past years only a few departments such as International Program and ESL Department were taking part. Now the Associated Students, Global Study Program, Professional Development Center along with volunteer students are participating to celebrate this weeklong fun event. Tran said, “Every year is being better and better and bigger and bigger with more collaboration through the other departments.”
